Repeat and Improve: Loops in Programs

🎵 Imagine singing Happy Birthday. You sing the same melody FOUR times! Your brain remembers the tune once and repeats it. Computers do the same thing with something called a loop. A loop is an instruction that tells a program to do the same steps again and again without you having to write them out every single time. Today you will discover why loops are one of a programmer's best friends!

Think of a loop like a roundabout. A car goes around the roundabout a set number of times before leaving. In a program, a repeat loop works the same way: you choose HOW MANY times the steps run, then the program follows them exactly that many times and stops. The number of times is called the loop count. Changing the loop count changes how many times the steps happen.

In a block-based program like Scratch, a repeat loop looks like a C-shaped block that wraps around the steps you want to repeat. You type the loop count into a small bubble on the block. The steps inside the C are called the loop body. Every time the loop runs one full cycle it is called an iteration — say it: IT-er-AY-shun. Each iteration does exactly the same steps as the one before.

Let us think about drawing a square. A square has 4 equal sides and 4 equal corners. Without a loop you would write: move 100 steps, turn 90 degrees — and copy that FOUR times (8 blocks total). With a loop you write: repeat 4 times — move 100 steps, turn 90 degrees. That is only 3 blocks! If you wanted to draw a hexagon (6 sides) instead, you only change the loop count to 6 and the turn to 60 degrees. Loops make changing your program fast and easy.

Debugging means finding and fixing mistakes in a program. The word comes from real history — a moth once got stuck inside an early computer and caused it to malfunction! 🦋 When you debug a loop, try being the computer yourself: trace through each iteration with your finger, counting the steps. Predict what the output should be, then compare it to what actually happens on screen. The difference between your prediction and the result is your clue!

Great programmers always review their loops by asking three questions: Does it start correctly? Does the loop body do the right steps? Does it stop at the right time? If you answer yes to all three, your loop is solid. Remember — loops are not just a shortcut. They make your programs easier to read, easier to fix, and easier to improve.
