Sew and Stitch: Pouches and Purses

🧵 Imagine you need a special pouch to carry your favourite treasure — maybe a stone collection, a friendship bracelet or some coins. Pouches and purses are made from fabric joined together by stitching. Today you will find out how designers choose fabrics, plan their ideas, sew a running stitch and check whether their finished pouch does the job it was made for. Let's get started!

Before you cut a single piece of fabric, a designer thinks about the USER — the real person who will use the product. Ask yourself: Who is it for? What will go inside? Does it need to be strong, soft, waterproof or pretty? These questions become your DESIGN CRITERIA (a checklist of what the pouch must do or be). Every decision you make should match those criteria.

Now you need to choose the right fabric. Fabrics have different properties — the qualities that make them useful. Felt is thick and does not fray (meaning its edges do not unravel), so it is great for beginners. Cotton is light and comes in hundreds of patterns. Denim is tough and hard-wearing. Think about whether your pouch needs to be soft, strong, washable or decorative — then pick the fabric that fits best. 🎨

A TEMPLATE is a shape cut from card that you draw around on your fabric to get an identical outline every time — like a cookie cutter for fabric! Place your template on the fabric, hold it still and draw around it with tailor's chalk or a fabric pen. Cut just outside the line. You will usually need TWO fabric panels (pieces) the same shape — one for the front and one for the back of the pouch. ✂️

Now for the stitch! Running stitch works like a needle diving in and out of water. Push the needle DOWN through both layers of fabric, then back UP a short distance away, making a small gap each time. Each stitch should be about 5 mm long — roughly the width of your little fingernail. Keep the stitches even (the same size) so the join is neat and strong. Sew along three sides to make a pocket shape, leaving the top open. 🪡

Decoration makes your pouch personal and attractive. You could sew on felt shapes, use a contrasting (different-coloured) thread to stitch a simple pattern, or add a button as a fastening. Remember: decoration should match the user's taste. A pouch for a younger child might have a bright star; one for a grandparent might have a neat floral motif. Always plan your decoration on your annotated design — a drawing with labels — BEFORE you pick up the needle. 🌟

The final step is EVALUATION — checking how well your finished pouch meets the design criteria. Ask yourself: Does it hold the objects it was meant for? Are the stitches even and secure? Does it look how I planned? What would I change next time? Good designers always reflect honestly, because every evaluation helps them improve.
