Climate Zones, Biomes and Vegetation Belts

🌍 Imagine standing at the hottest, stickiest place on Earth — a rainforest buzzing with colour and noise. Now teleport to a frozen Arctic tundra where almost nothing grows. Same planet, completely different worlds! What causes this? The answer lies in one invisible line drawn around the middle of the Earth: the Equator. The Equator is an imaginary line dividing Earth into two halves called hemispheres — the Northern Hemisphere and the Southern Hemisphere. The sun's rays hit the Equator almost straight on, like shining a torch directly at a wall. This concentrates heat, making equatorial regions very hot. The further you travel from the Equator (measured in degrees of latitude), the more the rays spread out and the cooler it gets.

Because of latitude, Earth has three main climate zones. Moving into temperate zones, vegetation changes to deciduous forests (trees that drop their leaves in autumn) and grasslands. Near the Poles, vegetation almost disappears — only mosses, lichens and tough grasses survive on the frozen tundra.

Now let us compare two temperate biomes on different continents. The temperate deciduous woodland of Western Europe (including the UK 🇬🇧) and the temperate deciduous forest of the eastern United States 🇺🇸 sit at similar latitudes — roughly 40°–55° North. Both biomes have oak, maple and beech trees, four clear seasons, and animals like deer and woodpeckers. Similar latitude means similar climate, which means similar vegetation!
