Mountains, Volcanoes and Earthquakes

🌋 Imagine the ground beneath your feet suddenly shaking, or a mountain shooting fire and ash into the sky! Earth might look still and solid, but deep underground it is always moving. Today we are going on a journey to discover how mountains grow, why volcanoes explode and what makes the ground tremble in an earthquake. Get ready — planet Earth is an incredible, restless place!

Think of Earth's crust like the cracked shell of a hard-boiled egg. The pieces of shell are the tectonic plates. When two plates slowly crash into each other, the rock in between gets pushed upwards, folding and crumpling over millions of years. This is how fold mountains form — they are like a giant rug being pushed from both ends and bunching up in the middle. 🏔️

Mountains have special physical features — that means natural things you can see and touch. Near the top, it is too cold and windy for trees, so you find bare rock and snow. Lower slopes have forests and rivers fed by melting snow called meltwater. Animals like eagles, ibex (mountain goats) and condors are adapted — meaning their bodies are specially suited — to survive in these tough conditions. 🦅

Now let's talk about volcanoes! 🌋 When two tectonic plates collide, one can be pushed down under the other. The rock melts into magma. Pressure builds up — like squeezing a toothpaste tube — until the magma forces its way up through a weak spot in the crust and bursts out. Once magma reaches the surface it is called lava. Over many eruptions, lava cools and hardens, building up a volcanic mountain.

Earthquakes happen when tectonic plates grind or scrape past each other and get stuck. Stress builds up over many years — like bending a ruler further and further — until the plates suddenly jolt and release all that energy at once. The energy travels through the ground as waves you can feel shaking the surface. The point underground where the earthquake starts is called the focus, and the point directly above it on the surface is the epicentre. 💥
