Sacred Texts and the Stories They Tell

📖 Imagine you had a special book that your family had treasured for hundreds of years. It was full of stories, wisdom, and guidance to help you live a good life. You would probably look after it very carefully! Many people around the world have exactly that — a sacred text. Sacred means holy or set apart as very special. Today we will explore four of the most important sacred texts in the world.

Let us look at each text a little more closely. The Bible is used by Christians. It is split into two main parts — the Old Testament and the New Testament. Christians believe it contains God's word and includes stories, poetry, letters, and teachings of Jesus. The Qur'an is Islam's holy book. Muslims believe it is the direct word of Allah, revealed to the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ through the angel Jibril (Gabriel). It is written in Arabic and memorised by millions.

The Torah is the most sacred text in Judaism. It contains the first five books of the Hebrew Bible and includes the laws God gave to Moses, including the Ten Commandments. In synagogues, the Torah is written by hand on a scroll — a long rolled-up sheet — by a specially trained scribe. The Guru Granth Sahib is the eternal Guru, or teacher, of the Sikhs. It contains hymns and teachings from the ten Sikh Gurus as well as from Muslim and Hindu holy men.

Believers do not just read their sacred texts — they show deep respect for them in special ways. Muslims perform wudu (ritual washing) before touching the Qur'an to be spiritually clean. Many Muslims keep the Qur'an on the highest shelf and wrap it in a special cloth. Jewish Torah scrolls are dressed in a velvet cover and a silver crown and are lifted and carried through the synagogue with great ceremony. People often reach out to touch the Torah as it passes.

In a Sikh Gurdwara (place of worship), the Guru Granth Sahib is treated like a living Guru. It sits on a special raised throne called a Manji Sahib, under a canopy. A Sikh waves a fan called a chauri over it as a sign of honour. At night it is carried to a special resting room. Christians show respect for the Bible in many ways — it is often read aloud in church services and some Christians keep it on a special stand called a lectern 📚.

Sacred texts are full of stories and teachings that give guidance. One famous story from the Bible is the Parable of the Good Samaritan. Jesus told this story to teach that we should help anyone who needs us — even a stranger. A man is robbed and left hurt on the road. Two people walk past. A Samaritan — seen as an outsider at the time — stops and cares for him. Christians use this story to understand that loving your neighbour means everyone, not just friends.

From the Guru Granth Sahib comes the teaching of Sewa, meaning selfless service — helping others without expecting anything in return. This idea runs through many of its hymns and shapes Sikh daily life. Muslims look to the Qur'an for guidance on being just, generous, and kind. Surah Al-Asr (Chapter 103) teaches that time is precious and we should use it to do good deeds and help others. These texts give believers a compass 🧭 for how to live.
