How Plants Work

🌱 Imagine drinking through a straw that is taller than a house! Plants do something just like that every single day. They pull water all the way up from the soil to their highest leaves without a pump or a heart. How on earth do they manage it? In this lesson you will find out exactly how plants work — from their hidden roots underground to the flowers waving in the breeze.

A flowering plant has four main parts: roots, stem, leaves and flowers. Each part has a special job, just like the different players in a football team. If any part stops doing its job, the whole plant struggles. Let us look at each part in turn.

So how does water actually travel up the stem? Inside every stem are tiny tubes called xylem (say: ZY-lem). Think of them like a bundle of thin drinking straws packed tightly together. Water molecules cling to the walls of these tubes and to each other — like a long chain — and are pulled upward as the leaves release water vapour into the air. This pulling action is called transpiration (trans-pir-AY-shun).

Leaves are the plant's food factory. They use a process called photosynthesis (foto-SIN-thuh-sis) — photo means light, synthesis means making — to turn sunlight, water and carbon dioxide gas from the air into sugar. The plant uses this sugar for energy to grow. Leaves are flat and wide to catch as much sunlight as possible, like tiny solar panels.

Flowers have the important job of helping the plant reproduce (make new plants). Pollen — a fine yellow powder — must travel from one flower to another. This is called pollination. Insects such as bees are attracted by a flower's colour, shape and sweet nectar. As a bee feeds, pollen sticks to its fuzzy body and is carried to the next flower it visits. Wind can also carry pollen for some plants, like grasses.

After pollination, the flower forms a seed inside a fruit. The seed contains everything a new plant needs to start growing. But seeds must move away from the parent plant so they are not crowded. This spreading of seeds is called seed dispersal (dis-PER-sal). Seeds travel in clever ways: carried by wind, eaten by animals, hooked onto fur, or even fired out by the plant!

Once a seed lands in the right place — with soil, water and warmth — it germinates (JER-min-ates), meaning it starts to grow. A tiny root pushes down and a shoot pushes up. The shoot grows leaves, then flowers, which are pollinated and form seeds again. This is the life cycle of a flowering plant: seed → germination → growth → flowering → pollination → seed formation → dispersal → new seed.
