Rocks, Soils and Fossils

🪨 Imagine you are a detective, but instead of solving crimes, you solve Earth's mysteries — using rocks! Rocks are everywhere: under your feet, in walls, even in the pencil you write with (graphite is a mineral in rock). Today you will discover how rocks form, why soils are different in different places, and how fossils act like nature's photograph album of ancient life.

Scientists group rocks by how they are made. Igneous rocks form when melted rock called magma cools and hardens — like toffee setting solid. Sedimentary rocks form when tiny grains of sand or mud pile up in layers over millions of years and get squashed together. Metamorphic rocks are rocks that have been changed by huge heat and pressure deep underground, a bit like clay being baked in a kiln.

We can compare rocks by their properties. Hardness tells us how easily a rock scratches — a diamond is the hardest natural material. Grain size describes how large the tiny pieces inside a rock are (you can sometimes see grains with a magnifier). Permeability (say: per-me-AH-bil-ity) means how easily water can pass through — like how a sponge lets water through but a dinner plate does not.

Now for fossils! 🦕 When an animal or plant dies and gets buried quickly in mud or sand, the soft parts rot away. The hard parts — like bones or shells — get replaced very slowly by minerals from the water seeping through. After millions of years, the shape is preserved in rock. Fossils show us creatures that lived long before humans ever walked on Earth.

Soil might look like plain old dirt, but it is actually a mixture of ingredients. Weathering breaks rocks into tiny pieces over time — rain, wind and frost act like nature's grinder. These tiny rock fragments mix with humus (dead and rotting plants and animals) to make soil. Different rocks produce different soils, which is why some gardens grow better plants than others!
