Light, Shadow and Tone: Drawing with Leonardo da Vinci

Imagine you are holding a ball in sunlight. One side is bright, the other is in shadow. Your eyes instantly know the ball is round — not flat — because of those light and dark areas. Artists call this effect tone 🎨. Today you will learn to create tone in your own drawings, just like one of the greatest artists who ever lived: Leonardo da Vinci.

Leonardo's secret was observing, which means looking with extreme care before putting pencil to paper. He studied how light fell across faces, hands, and drapery (fabric). He noticed that objects are never just one shade — they move from a highlight (the brightest spot where light hits directly) through mid-tones to deep shadow. This journey from light to dark is called a tonal gradient.

To create tone with a pencil, artists use hatching — drawing parallel lines close together. The closer the lines, the darker the area looks. For even darker shadows, you can layer a second set of lines at an angle on top. This technique is called cross-hatching. Think of it like weaving: one set of threads goes across, another goes down, and together they create a denser, darker patch.

Leonardo often drew with silverpoint (a metal rod on special paper) or chalk, but the ideas are exactly the same as using a pencil today. In his famous drawing called the Study of Drapery, he built up layers of lines to make flat cloth look heavy and three-dimensional. He also used chiaroscuro — an Italian word meaning 'light-dark' — to make figures look solid and lifelike rather than like flat outlines.

Great artists use sketchbooks to practise and improve. Leonardo revisited the same subjects many times, refining (improving) each drawing. When you use a sketchbook, you are following in his footsteps. Try drawing a simple object — a crumpled piece of paper, an apple, or your own fist — two or three times. Each time, look more carefully at the shadows and try to make your tones more accurate.
