Relief and Pattern: Sculpture with William Morris

Imagine walking into a grand Victorian house and seeing the walls, curtains, and floors covered in swirling leaves, twisting vines, and bold flowers — all made by one designer! That designer was William Morris. Born in 1834, Morris believed everyday objects should be beautiful. He turned nature into art that people could live with every single day. Today you are going to follow in his footsteps and create your own clay tile. 🌿

Morris was part of the Arts and Crafts movement — a group of artists who believed that handmade objects were more valuable than factory-made ones. Craftsmanship means the skill and care a maker puts into an object. Morris wanted every tile, curtain, and pot to show the human hand that made it. He studied real plants carefully and then simplified their shapes so they could tile across a surface without gaps.

Before you touch any clay, great designers always plan in a sketchbook. Think of your sketchbook like a scientist's notebook — you observe, experiment, and solve problems on paper first so that when you work with your material you already know what you are doing. Choose one natural motif: a leaf, a feather, a flower, a snail shell, or a simple bird. Draw it three or four times, making it simpler each time until it has clear bold lines. 🌸

Now for the clay! Flatten your clay slab so it is about 1 cm thick — think of rolling pastry. Smooth the top with a damp finger. This is your tile base. To create low relief, you have two choices: carve into the clay by pressing or scratching lines away, or add clay on top by pressing small rolled pieces onto the surface. Morris's tiles often had raised outlines with texture pressed inside the shapes to suggest petals or veins.

Texture is what gives a tile its character. Look at a real leaf — it has a central vein with smaller veins branching off like a river system. You can copy this with a pointed clay tool. For petals, gently press a small loop tool in shallow curved strokes to suggest soft curves. Morris always added multiple layers of pattern — a large shape filled with smaller shapes inside, like a Russian doll. This layering makes designs feel rich and detailed. 🌺

When your tile is finished, step back and evaluate it — that means looking at it critically, like an art critic. Ask yourself: Can I see a clear motif? Does the relief stand out from the background?
