How the Internet Works

🌍 Imagine sending a letter to a friend on the other side of the world and it arrives in less than a second. That is basically what happens every time you search online or send an email! But how does the internet actually do this? In this lesson you will find out how devices talk to each other, how your data travels, and how to decide whether what you read online is trustworthy.

A network is a group of devices connected together so they can share information. Your school probably has a network linking computers, tablets, and printers. A home Wi-Fi network connects phones, laptops, and smart speakers. The internet is the biggest network of all — it connects billions of devices around the entire planet using cables under the ground, under the sea, and signals through the air.

Every device on the internet has a unique address called an IP address (IP stands for Internet Protocol). Think of it like a house number and postcode — it tells the internet exactly where to deliver information. When you type a website address, your device looks up the IP address of that website's computer, called a server, so it knows where to send the request.

Data does not travel in one big lump. It is broken into small chunks called packets — a bit like cutting a long letter into separate paragraphs, putting each one in its own envelope, and posting them separately. Each packet travels across the internet, sometimes by different routes, and they are reassembled in the right order when they arrive. This makes the system fast and reliable even if one route is busy or broken.

Anyone can publish a website, which means not everything online is accurate or trustworthy. Before you believe something you read, ask yourself: Who wrote this? Are they an expert? Is there a date — is it recent? Can you find the same fact on other reliable sites, like a school or museum website? If you are unsure, always check with a trusted adult. 🧐
