📦 Imagine you are in a supermarket. You spot a box of cereal, a tube of toothpaste and a bag of crisps. They all do the same basic job — hold a product safely — but they look, feel and open completely differently. Why? Because a clever designer made hundreds of choices before that package ever reached the shelf. Today you are going to think like that designer!

Before designers draw anything, they investigate existing products. This is called research. They ask: Who is this package for? What does it need to protect? How is it opened and resealed? Is it easy to carry? The answers become their design criteria — a list of must-haves that the finished package must meet. Think of design criteria like rules in a game: you cannot win unless you follow them.

Now let us look at how designers communicate their ideas. They use annotated sketches — drawings with written notes pointing to important features — and cross-sectional diagrams, which show a slice through the package so you can see what is inside. Think of a cross-section like cutting a boiled egg in half: suddenly you can see the yolk that was hidden. These drawings help designers spot problems before they start cutting and gluing.

Choosing the right material is just as important as the shape. Card is lightweight and easy to score and fold — scoring means pressing a line into card so it bends neatly, like a hinge on a door. Corrugated card has wavy layers inside that act like tiny shock absorbers, great for fragile items. Plastic film can keep food fresh. Each material has strengths and weaknesses, so designers match the material to the product and user.

When you make your prototype, joining techniques matter. Tabs are flaps built into the net that slot or glue into slots in another panel — like interlocking fingers. Slots and tabs make a strong join without needing tape. PVA glue works well on card but needs drying time. Always test your joins before decorating! A beautiful box that falls apart is not a successful package.

The final step is evaluation — comparing your finished package honestly against the design criteria you wrote at the start. Ask yourself: Does it protect the product? Is it right for the user? What would you change next time and why? Great designers do not see problems as failures; they see them as information. Every evaluation makes the next design better. 🌟
