Plan, Draft, Improve: Extended Writing

✍️ Imagine you are about to build a house. Would you just start stacking bricks with no plan? Of course not! Great writers work the same way. They plan first, write a draft next, then go back and improve it. Today you will learn exactly how to do all three steps — and by the end you will feel like a real author in charge of your own writing. Let's go!

📋 Step 1 is planning. A plan is a quick, rough map of your ideas before you write full sentences. You might use bullet points, a story map (a simple flow diagram of what happens in each part) or a writing framework (a grid with sections like Opening, Build-up, Problem, Resolution, Ending). Plans save time because you always know what to write next. You never get stuck staring at a blank page!

📝 Step 2 is drafting. You take your plan and turn each section into a paragraph. A paragraph is a group of sentences all about the same idea. Think of each paragraph like a room in that house — each room has one job (living room for relaxing, kitchen for cooking). When your idea changes, you start a new paragraph, just as you move to a new room.

🔗 Good writing uses cohesive devices — that means words and phrases that glue paragraphs and sentences together so your writing flows smoothly. There are three main types: time connectives (first, later, the next morning), pronoun links (using he, she, they so you do not repeat a name), and adverbials (at the top of the hill, as the sun set). These tell the reader where, when or how things connect.

🔍 Step 3 is revising and editing. Revising means improving bigger things — swapping a boring word for a more precise one (said becomes whispered), adding a cohesive device, or splitting a long confusing sentence into two clear ones. Editing means fixing smaller things — checking capital letters, full stops, commas and spellings. Imagine revising as redecorating a room and editing as hoovering the floor afterwards.
