Voices in the Text: Punctuating Speech

🎭 Imagine reading a story where you cannot tell who is speaking or where the words begin and end. Confusing, right? Punctuation is like a costume for speech — it shows the reader exactly which words come out of a character's mouth. Today you will learn the rules that every published author follows when they write dialogue, and you will practise them too!

The most important punctuation mark for speech is the inverted comma. Inverted commas are sometimes called speech marks or quotation marks. They look like tiny raised sixes and nines: " ". You place one at the start of the spoken words and one at the end. Everything the character actually says lives inside them — think of them as a speech bubble drawn with punctuation.

Here is the golden rule for a speech sentence: the punctuation that belongs to the spoken words always goes INSIDE the closing inverted comma, not outside. So a full stop, comma, question mark or exclamation mark all snuggle inside the speech marks. Have a look at these three examples and spot the pattern: "I found the treasure," whispered Rosa. "Where did you hide it?" asked Marco. "Give it back!" he shouted.

A reporting clause tells the reader who spoke and how. Words like said, whispered, shouted, asked, and replied are all reporting verbs (action words that report speech). When the reporting clause comes AFTER the speech, you swap the full stop inside the speech marks for a comma. When it comes BEFORE, you put a comma after it and then open the inverted commas. Study this: Before: Rosa whispered, "I found the treasure." After: "I found the treasure," whispered Rosa.

Now here is a very important layout rule: every time a different character speaks, you must start a NEW paragraph — even if it is only one line. This is like giving each character their own lane on the road. It stops the reader getting muddled about who is saying what. Skilled authors also use this rule cleverly: a very short paragraph of one line can make a moment feel fast and exciting, while a longer paragraph feels slower and more thoughtful.

Great writers use dialogue to reveal character — to show what kind of person someone is. A brave character might say, "I will go first, no matter what!" A nervous one might say, "D-do we really have to?" You do not always need to tell the reader a character is funny or kind; you can SHOW it through their words. This is sometimes called show, don't tell, and it is a secret weapon of brilliant authors. 🖊️
