Lines, Zones and Time

Imagine you are an astronaut floating above the Earth 🌍. You can see the whole globe spinning slowly below you. How would you describe exactly where a city is? You can't say 'a bit to the left' — that changes as the Earth turns! Scientists and explorers solved this puzzle by drawing invisible lines all over the globe. These lines have no colour and no paint — they exist only on maps and in our minds, but they are incredibly useful.

The first set of lines runs left and right around the globe like the rings on a tree trunk. These are called lines of latitude. Latitude is measured in degrees (°). The most important line of latitude is the Equator at 0°, which circles the exact middle of the Earth like a belt. Lines above the Equator are in the Northern Hemisphere (half of Earth), and lines below are in the Southern Hemisphere.

Two special lines of latitude are called the Tropics. The Tropic of Cancer sits at about 23.5° North and the Tropic of Capricorn sits at about 23.5° South. The band of Earth between the two Tropics is called the tropics zone — it is the hottest part of the planet because the Sun shines almost directly overhead there all year round. Countries like Brazil, India and Kenya sit inside this warm zone. ☀️

The second set of lines runs from the top of the Earth (the North Pole) down to the bottom (the South Pole), like the segments of an orange. These are lines of longitude. The most important line of longitude is called the Greenwich Meridian (also called the Prime Meridian). It sits at 0° and passes through Greenwich in London, UK. Every other line of longitude is measured in degrees East or West of this line.

When you put latitude and longitude together you get a coordinate — a precise address for any spot on Earth! A coordinate is written as two numbers, for example 51° N, 0° W is Greenwich in London. The first number tells you how far North or South you are; the second tells you how far East or West. Think of it like a grid reference on a treasure map. 🗺️ With coordinates, you can pinpoint a single building anywhere on the planet.

Now for the really mind-bending idea — time zones! 🕐 The Earth spins once every 24 hours. As it spins, different parts face the Sun, so it is daytime in some places and night-time in others at exactly the same moment. Geographers divided the world into 24 time zones, one for roughly every 15° of longitude. As you travel East, clocks go forward. As you travel West, clocks go back. The starting point for world time is Greenwich — this is called Greenwich Mean Time, or GMT.
