Benin: An African Kingdom

🌍 Imagine a city bigger than most European cities of its time, protected by a vast network of walls and ditches stretching over 16,000 kilometres — longer than the Great Wall of China! This was Benin City, the capital of the Kingdom of Benin in West Africa. While Vikings were raiding British shores around 900 CE, Benin was already growing into one of the most powerful kingdoms in the world.

Benin society was carefully organised, a bit like a pyramid. At the very top sat the Oba — the all-powerful king and spiritual leader. The word Oba means ruler or king in the Edo language. Below the Oba were nobles and chiefs who helped run the kingdom. Skilled craftspeople, traders and farmers made up the rest of society. Everyone had a clear role, and the Oba's word was law.

The Oba lived in a magnificent royal palace at the heart of Benin City. His court was full of advisors, warriors, priests and artists. Trade made Benin very wealthy. Merchants travelled long routes exchanging ivory (elephant tusks), pepper, cloth and enslaved people for goods like copper, glass beads and cloth from North Africa and Europe. These trade networks linked Benin to a vast world beyond its borders.

One of the most amazing things about Benin is its extraordinary artworks — especially the Benin Bronzes. These are hundreds of detailed sculptures, plaques (flat metal panels) and statues made from brass and bronze. Craftspeople called brass-smiths used a clever technique called lost-wax casting. They shaped the design in wax, covered it in clay, melted the wax out and poured molten metal in. The result was a perfect, detailed metal sculpture!

The bronze plaques hung inside the royal palace and acted like a history book. They showed the Oba in ceremonies, warriors in battle, traders at work and animals important to Benin culture. Because Benin did not use a written alphabet, these images and oral history — stories passed down by speaking aloud — are the main ways we learn about Benin's past. Artefacts (objects made by people in the past) and oral history are both types of historical sources.

In 1897, British soldiers invaded Benin City and took thousands of bronzes and other treasures back to Britain. Many ended up in the British Museum in London. Today, this is a major debate — should these objects be returned to Nigeria? The Nigerian government and many historians argue yes. Some museums have begun returning pieces. This shows that history is not just the past; it affects decisions we make today! 🤔
