Viking Invasion: Raiders, Traders and Kings

⚔️ Imagine waking up to the sound of shouting and the smell of smoke. A fleet of long wooden ships has appeared out of the sea mist, and fierce warriors are leaping onto the beach. This is what happened to the monks of Lindisfarne, a small island off the north-east coast of England, in 793 CE. This terrifying raid is where our story begins — the start of the Viking Age in Britain.

The Vikings came from Scandinavia — the lands we now call Norway, Denmark and Sweden. Their homelands had limited farmland, so many people struggled to feed their families. They were also brilliant sailors and shipbuilders. Their longships were shallow enough to sail up rivers and fast enough to cross the open sea. Britain, with its rich monasteries full of gold and its fertile farmland, looked very tempting from across the water. 🚢

At first the Vikings raided — hit quickly, grab valuables, and sail away. But from around 850 CE, many decided to stay. They settled in large parts of northern and eastern England, an area that became known as the Danelaw (the law of the Danes). They farmed, traded and built towns. Many English place names ending in -by (meaning village) or -thorpe (meaning hamlet) — like Derby or Scunthorpe — are Viking words that still survive today. 🏘️

Not everyone gave up without a fight. Alfred, King of Wessex (southern England), refused to let the Vikings conquer his kingdom. After a desperate winter hiding in the marshes of Somerset in 878 CE, he regrouped his army and defeated the Viking leader Guthrum at the Battle of Ethandun. Alfred then did something clever — instead of killing Guthrum, he made him agree to be baptised as a Christian and accept a peace treaty. 🤝

Alfred's work was continued by his children and grandchildren. His grandson Athelstan won a massive battle at Brunanburh in 937 CE against a combined Viking and Scottish army. After this victory, Athelstan was recognised as king by rulers across Britain. Many historians call him the first true King of England — the moment when separate Anglo-Saxon kingdoms finally became one unified country. 👑

How do we know all this? Historians use two main types of sources. Written sources include the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle, a year-by-year record of events ordered by Alfred himself — though remember it was written by Anglo-Saxons, so it may be biased against Vikings! Archaeological sources include objects dug up from the ground, like the Jorvik dig in York, which revealed Viking houses, tools, jewellery and even food scraps — giving us a vivid picture of everyday Viking life. 🔍
