Place Value to 10,000

🌍 Imagine counting every seat in a huge football stadium. Some stadiums hold more than 9,000 people! To keep track of big numbers like these, mathematicians use a clever system called place value. Every digit has a special position, and that position tells you exactly how much it is worth. Today we are going to explore numbers all the way up to 10,000!

Place value works like a team of pigeonholes. Each pigeonhole has a name: Thousands, Hundreds, Tens, and Ones. The digit sitting in each pigeonhole tells you how many of that value you have. For example, in the number 4,726, the 4 is in the Thousands pigeonhole, so it is worth 4,000. The 7 is worth 700, the 2 is worth 20, and the 6 is worth just 6.

Now let us put numbers in order. Think of a number line like a very long ruler — smaller numbers sit on the left and bigger numbers sit on the right. To compare two numbers, start by looking at the thousands digit. If those are the same, move to the hundreds, then the tens, then the ones. This is just like comparing surnames before first names in an alphabetical list!

Rounding makes numbers easier to work with, like estimating the crowd in a stadium instead of counting every single person. To round to the nearest 10, look at the ones digit. If it is 5 or more, round up; if it is 4 or less, round down. The same rule applies for rounding to the nearest 100 — check the tens digit — and the nearest 1,000 — check the hundreds digit.

Numbers can also go below zero — these are called negative numbers (negative means less than zero). You will meet them in real life when a temperature drops below freezing. On a thermometer, 0°C is the freezing point of water. A temperature of -3°C means 3 degrees below zero, which is colder than -1°C. The further left on a number line, the colder and smaller the number.
