Creation, the Universe, and Why We Are Here

🌌 Imagine you are standing in total darkness. Nothing exists — no stars, no Earth, no people. Then suddenly... everything begins. One of the biggest questions humans have ever asked is: how did all of this start? And why are we here? People all around the world have thought deeply about these questions, and different religions and worldviews give fascinating, different answers. Let's explore three of them!

🕊️ Christianity and the Book of Genesis. Christians believe that God created the universe and everything in it. The story of creation is found in Genesis, the very first book of the Bible. According to Genesis, God created the world in six days — light, sky, land, plants, stars, animals — and on the seventh day, God rested. Humans were created last, made in the image of God, which means humans are seen as special and precious.

🌸 Hinduism and the Rigveda. Hinduism is one of the world's oldest religions, and it has rich and varied creation stories. One famous hymn from an ancient scripture (sacred text) called the Rigveda, written over 3,000 years ago, asks deep questions: before creation, was there light or darkness? Was there water? The hymn honestly wonders whether even the gods know how it all began! Many Hindus believe Brahman — the ultimate reality or divine force — is present in everything and that the universe goes through endless cycles of creation, preservation, and destruction.

🔬 Humanism and the Scientific View. Humanists do not follow a religion or believe in a god or gods. Instead, they place their trust in science and human reason to explain the universe. Humanists accept the scientific account: the universe began around 13.8 billion years ago in an event called the Big Bang, and human life evolved over millions of years from earlier life forms. Even without a creator, Humanists believe life is full of meaning — we create our own purpose through the choices we make and the good we do for others.

🤔 Why do these questions matter? Whether people are religious or not, questions about where we came from and why we are here are deeply important. They help us think about how we should treat other people and the natural world. A Christian who believes humans are made in God's image may feel a strong duty to care for others. A Hindu may feel connected to all living things through Brahman. A Humanist may be motivated by compassion and shared humanity. Different answers, but similar care for the world!
