Habitats, Food Chains and Ecosystems

🌿 Imagine waking up buried under snow with no coat, no food and nowhere warm to sleep. Sounds terrible! But a Arctic fox does exactly that — and it thrives. How? Because it has the perfect body for its habitat (the place where a living thing naturally lives). Today we will find out how animals and plants are built for their homes, and how all living things in a habitat are connected.

Every living thing has adaptations — special features or behaviours that help it survive in its habitat. A cactus stores water in its fat stem because its desert habitat is dry. A duck has webbed feet because it lives on water. A hedgehog has spines to scare off predators (animals that hunt other animals). Think of adaptations as a creature's personal survival toolkit 🧰.

Now let us look at how living things in a habitat depend on each other for food. A food chain shows who eats whom. Every food chain starts with a producer — a plant or algae that uses sunlight to make its own food (this is called photosynthesis). Next comes a consumer — an animal that eats the plant. Then may come another consumer that eats the first. Arrows show the direction energy travels: from eaten to eater. 🌞➡️🌱➡️🐛➡️🐦

In a food chain, a predator is an animal that hunts and eats other animals. The animal that gets eaten is called the prey. Most animals are both predator AND prey — the blue tit hunts caterpillars (so it is a predator) but is hunted by the sparrowhawk (so it is also prey). This chain of eating connects every living thing in a habitat into an ecosystem — a community of living things and their environment working together.

What happens when something in the food chain changes? Imagine all the rabbits in a meadow disappeared because of a disease. The foxes would have less food and their numbers would drop. The grass would grow much taller with fewer rabbits eating it. A change to one part of a habitat ripples through everything else — like pulling one piece from a Jenga tower 🧱. This is why protecting habitats matters so much.
