🌍 Every time you watch a video, send a message, or search for something online, millions of tiny pieces of information are racing around the world in less than a second. But how does your message get from your device to a friend on the other side of the planet without getting lost? The answer lies in networks — clever systems that link devices together so they can share data. A network is a group of devices connected together so they can communicate and share resources. Your school probably has a Local Area Network (LAN) — devices in one building linked by cables or Wi-Fi. The internet is a huge Wide Area Network (WAN) that links millions of smaller networks worldwide. Every device on a network has a unique address called an IP address (Internet Protocol address), a bit like a postal address for data. Without IP addresses, information would have nowhere to go.

Two key components make networks work. A router is a device that reads IP addresses and decides the best path to send data — like a traffic controller at a busy junction. A server is a powerful computer that stores information and responds to requests. When you visit a website, a web server sends the page to your device. Your device is called a client because it requests services. This client-server model is at the heart of most internet services.

Now here is something fascinating. When you send a photo or a message, it is not sent in one big chunk. It is broken into small pieces called packets. Each packet contains a piece of the data, the sender's IP address, the receiver's IP address, and a sequence number so the packets can be put back in the right order. Packets from the same message can travel different routes across the internet and arrive at different times. At the destination, the device reassembles them in the correct sequence. This system is called packet switching.

The internet is the infrastructure — the physical cables, routers, and connections. Services are the things you use on top of that infrastructure. The World Wide Web (WWW) is a service that lets you view web pages using a browser. Email is a service for sending messages between addresses. Streaming services like music and video apps deliver continuous data so content plays as it arrives rather than downloading completely first. Each service uses agreed rules called protocols — for example, web pages use HTTP or HTTPS, and email uses SMTP.

Networks and internet services shape almost every part of modern life — from how hospitals share patient records to how weather forecasts are calculated using remote supercomputers. Understanding how networks work helps you use technology more confidently and critically. It also helps you stay safer online: knowing that all your data travels as packets through many different routers reminds you why using secure, encrypted connections (look for HTTPS in your browser) is so important to protect your personal information.
