Ethics in Action: How Do Beliefs Shape Choices?

🌍 Imagine you see someone drop their shopping in the rain. Do you stop to help? Most people would — but why? Is it because of a rule you follow, a feeling inside you, or something you believe about how the world should be? Today we are going to investigate a big idea: how the beliefs people hold at their very core — about life, people, and the universe — actually shape the choices they make every single day. We call these choices ethics: deciding what is right, fair, or kind. Four worldviews will be our guides — Buddhism, Sikhism, Judaism, and Humanism.

🕉️ Buddhism teaches that all living things are connected and that suffering exists because of greed, hatred, and ignorance. A central ethical principle is ahimsa (ah-HIM-sah), meaning non-harm or non-violence. Buddhists try to avoid hurting any living being — in actions, words, and even thoughts. This leads many Buddhists to be vegetarian, to campaign against war, and to practise meditation to calm anger. The Buddhist teacher Thich Nhat Hanh founded Engaged Buddhism, a movement that takes ahimsa into real social action — working for peace, helping refugees, and caring for the environment — because beliefs must be lived, not just thought.

🪯 In Sikhism, one of the most powerful ethical concepts is seva (SAY-vah), which means selfless service — doing something to help others without expecting any reward. Guru Nanak, the founder of Sikhism, taught that serving people is the same as serving the divine. Every Sikh Gurdwara (place of worship) runs a langar — a free community kitchen open to absolutely everyone, regardless of religion, background, or wealth. During floods in India and the COVID-19 pandemic, Sikh communities around the world provided millions of free meals. Seva is not just a nice idea; it is a daily practice that puts belief directly into action.

✡️ Judaism contains a concept called tikkun olam (tih-KOON oh-LAM), which means repairing the world. Jewish teaching holds that the world is broken and imperfect, and that human beings have a responsibility — called tzedakah, meaning justice or righteous giving — to work towards fixing it. This is not optional charity; it is an obligation. Many Jewish organisations run food banks, campaign for refugees, and work on climate justice because these are seen as direct expressions of religious duty. The idea that every person is created b'tzelem Elohim — in the image of God — means every human life has infinite worth and must be protected.

🤝 Humanism is a non-religious worldview held by people who do not believe in God or gods. Humanists base their ethics not on sacred texts or divine commands, but on reason (thinking carefully about consequences) and empathy (understanding and sharing the feelings of others). Humanists believe that human beings are responsible for creating a fair and caring world because there is no higher power to do it for us. Humanist organisations campaign for human rights, equality, and scientific education. The British Humanist Association runs programmes in schools and supports people through life events. Humanist ethics arrive at many of the same commitments — to justice, compassion, and dignity — but through a completely different starting point.

🔍 Now let us zoom out and compare. All four worldviews lead people to act with compassion and justice — but they get there differently. Buddhism and Sikhism emphasise practice and community action as spiritual discipline. Judaism frames moral action as covenant — a binding agreement of responsibility with God. Humanism grounds ethics in shared humanity and rational thought. This shows us something important: people can reach similar ethical conclusions from very different starting points. Understanding why someone acts — not just what they do — helps us respect and learn from each other, even when our beliefs are different.
