Formal and Informal: Register in Writing

🎭 Imagine two messages. The first: 'Hey, can u come 2 my party? It's gonna be sick!' The second: 'I would be most grateful if you were able to attend my celebration.' Both invite someone to a party — but they feel completely different! That difference is called register. Register is the level of formality a writer chooses based on who they are writing for (the audience) and why they are writing (the purpose). Choosing the wrong register is like wearing pyjamas to a job interview — technically fine, but sending completely the wrong message. So what actually changes when we shift register? Three big things: vocabulary, sentence structure, and grammatical choices. In informal writing, we use contractions (can't, won't), slang, short sentences, and first names. In formal writing, we avoid contractions, choose sophisticated vocabulary, write in complete sentences, and often use the passive voice. Compare 'We need to fix this now' (informal) with 'It is recommended that this matter be addressed without delay' (formal). Notice how the formal version feels more distant and impersonal — that distance is deliberate. It signals professionalism and respect.

Now for the star of formal writing: the subjunctive mood. The subjunctive is a special verb form used to talk about wishes, recommendations, requirements, or hypothetical situations — things that are not certain facts. You have probably seen it without knowing its name. When someone says 'If I were you...' rather than 'If I was you...', that were is the subjunctive. In formal writing, the subjunctive appears in two main patterns. First, after verbs like recommend, suggest, request, insist, demand — for example: 'The committee recommends that the report be submitted by Friday.' Second, in conditional phrases starting with if or were — for example: 'Were the proposal to succeed, it would benefit the whole school.'

Understanding register also means recognising context clues. Ask yourself: Who is the audience? A friend, a stranger, an authority figure, the general public? What is the purpose? To entertain, persuade, inform, or request? What is the form? A tweet, a letter of complaint, a speech, a story? A letter to a council about a local issue demands formal register. A diary entry about the same issue can be completely informal. Good writers are flexible — they can operate at any point on the register scale and, crucially, they can explain their choices. That skill of conscious, deliberate language choice is what separates competent writers from excellent ones.
