Global Connections: Trade, Resources and Economic Activity

🌍 Think about your breakfast this morning. Perhaps you had orange juice from Brazil, cereal made from Canadian wheat, or chocolate spread containing cocoa from Ghana. Without realising it, you were connected to countries thousands of kilometres away! This is the power of global trade — the buying and selling of goods and services between countries. In this lesson, you will discover why countries cannot supply everything their people need on their own, how natural resources drive economic activity, and how Europe and the Americas are stitched together by invisible threads of trade.

🪨 Natural resources are materials found in nature that humans use — things like oil, coal, timber, fresh water, fertile soil and metal ores. Crucially, they are not spread evenly across the Earth. Physical geography decides where they are found. Venezuela and Saudi Arabia sit above enormous oil reserves. The Amazon Basin holds the world's largest tropical rainforest, providing timber and biodiversity. Canada's vast prairies produce huge amounts of wheat. Chile mines more copper than any other country on Earth. Because one country rarely has everything it needs, nations must look outward — and that is where trade begins.

🗺️ Trade routes are the paths — across oceans, through canals and along roads — that goods travel between countries. The Atlantic Ocean is one of the busiest trading corridors on Earth, with ships carrying goods between the Americas and Europe every single day. The Panama Canal, a human-made waterway cutting through Central America, allows ships to pass between the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans without sailing all the way around South America — saving up to 8,000 kilometres per journey. Major trading ports such as Rotterdam in the Netherlands and Santos in Brazil act as gateways, receiving and sending enormous quantities of goods.

💱 When countries trade, they earn money — and this drives economic activity. Economic activity simply means all the ways people produce, buy and sell things. Geographers group economic activity into four sectors. The primary sector involves extracting raw materials, such as mining copper or growing wheat. The secondary sector turns raw materials into products, for example a factory making chocolate from cocoa beans. The tertiary sector covers services like banking, transport and tourism. The quaternary sector involves knowledge and research, such as designing new technology. Wealthier nations tend to have large tertiary and quaternary sectors, while developing economies often rely more heavily on primary industries.

🤝 Trade agreements are deals between countries that make trading easier, often by reducing taxes called tariffs on imported goods. Import means bringing goods into a country; export means sending goods out. The European Union (EU) is a powerful example — its 27 member countries trade freely with each other as if they were one large market. Across the Atlantic, countries like Canada, the USA and Mexico have trade agreements too. These connections mean that a car assembled in Germany might contain steel from Spain, rubber from Brazil and electronics designed in the USA — global teamwork in one vehicle!

🌿 Trade and resource use also have environmental consequences. Transporting goods by ship, lorry and plane releases carbon dioxide, a greenhouse gas that contributes to climate change. Mining and farming can damage ecosystems — for example, rainforest in Brazil is sometimes cleared to grow soya beans for export. Geographers must consider these trade-offs: how do we meet people's needs today without harming the planet for future generations? Sustainable trade — choosing suppliers who protect the environment and treat workers fairly — is increasingly important as the world becomes ever more connected.
