Living with Questions: What Matters Most?

🌍 Imagine you could ask the wisest person who ever lived just one question. What would it be? Philosophers, religious thinkers, and ordinary people across every culture and every century have wrestled with the same big questions: Why are we here? What makes a life worth living? How should we treat each other? These are called ultimate questions — questions so deep that no single experiment or textbook can give a complete answer. Today we explore how different religions and Humanism respond to these questions, and you will start to shape your own thoughtful, reasoned view.

🕌🕍✝️ Different religions offer distinct but often overlapping answers to ultimate questions. Christians often say life's meaning comes from loving God and loving your neighbour, guided by teachings like the Sermon on the Mount. Muslims emphasise submission to Allah and living justly, following the Five Pillars as a complete way of life. Jewish teaching centres on the covenant with God and the commandments (mitzvot) — 613 rules that shape every part of daily living. All three traditions share a strong emphasis on justice, compassion, and caring for the vulnerable.

🕉️☸️ In Hinduism, a central idea is dharma — one's duty or right way of living, which varies according to your role in life and stage of life. Living according to dharma is thought to lead to a good life and good karma (the moral law of cause and effect). Buddhism teaches that suffering comes from craving and attachment, and that following the Noble Eightfold Path — a guide to right thinking, speech, and action — leads to peace and eventually nirvana (liberation from suffering). Both traditions stress that inner intention matters as much as outward behaviour.

🤝 Humanism is a non-religious worldview followed by people who do not believe in gods or an afterlife. Humanists argue that meaning and morality are human achievements — we create purpose through relationships, creativity, and contributing to the wellbeing of others. Their ethical approach uses reason and empathy rather than sacred texts. Humanists often say: if this life is the only life we have, that makes it even more important to live it well and treat others with kindness. This shows that strong moral values do not require religious belief.

⚖️ A useful tool for thinking about moral questions is the Golden Rule — the idea that you should treat others as you would wish to be treated yourself. Remarkably, almost every major worldview has its own version of this principle. In Christianity: 'Do to others what you want them to do to you.' In Islam: 'None of you truly believes until he wishes for his brother what he wishes for himself.' In Judaism: 'Love your neighbour as yourself.' In Hinduism and Buddhism similar ideas appear, and Humanists use the same principle grounded in empathy. Shared principles like this are called ethical common ground.

✍️ Now it is your turn to think like a philosopher. When you answer a big question in RE, a strong response always does three things: first, it states your view clearly; second, it gives a reason for that view; third, it shows you have considered another perspective fairly. This is called a reasoned argument. For example: 'I think treating others with kindness matters most because it reduces suffering directly — this is supported by both Buddhist teaching on compassion and the Humanist emphasis on empathy. However, a Christian might argue that love of God must come first, as the source of all other love.' Notice how it presents a view, a reason, AND a different perspective.
