Texture: Making Art You Can Almost Feel

Run your hand across a brick wall, a fluffy cat, or a smooth glass window. Each one feels completely different — that difference is called texture. In real life, texture is something you touch. In art, texture is something you SEE. Artists use special drawing tricks to make a flat surface look rough, bumpy, soft, or shiny. This is called visual texture (something that looks textured but you cannot actually feel it). Learning to draw texture is like giving your artwork a superpower — suddenly things look real and alive! 🎨

Artists create visual texture using marks — small repeated shapes, lines, or dots. The type of mark changes everything. Tiny parallel lines (lines running side by side) make surfaces look smooth and shiny, like metal or glass. Short curved strokes clustered together suggest fur or grass. Overlapping circles or ovals hint at fish scales or roof tiles. Irregular (uneven, not the same) jagged scratches suggest cracked rock or rough bark. The secret is repetition — doing the same small mark over and over until the pattern fills a shape.

There are two main types of texture in art. Actual texture is texture you can truly feel — think of a painting where the artist squeezed thick paint straight from the tube so it dried in chunky ridges. The famous Dutch painter Vincent van Gogh often did this, creating swirling ridges of paint you can almost see jumping off the canvas. Simulated texture (texture that is copied or imitated) is when an artist uses lines and marks on flat paper to make something LOOK textured without any real bumps at all. Most drawings use simulated texture.

One powerful texture technique is called hatching. Hatching means drawing many parallel lines close together to suggest a surface or shadow. Cross-hatching goes one step further — you draw a second set of lines crossing over the first ones, like a grid or an X pattern. The closer the lines, the darker and denser the texture looks. Artists since the Renaissance (a great period of European art from the 1300s to 1600s) used cross-hatching in pen-and-ink drawings to show everything from velvet cloaks to rocky mountains.

Another technique is stippling — creating texture and shading using only dots. More dots packed close together create a dark, dense area. Fewer dots spread far apart create a lighter, airier area. Pointillist (point-ih-LIST) artists like Georges Seurat applied this idea to entire paintings, building up images from thousands of tiny dots of pure color. Up close, you see only dots. Step back, and a complete scene appears! 🔵🟡 Stippling is also used in scientific illustration (drawings used in science and nature books) to show things like the bumpy skin of a toad.

Texture also helps tell a story in your art. Imagine drawing two characters: one knight in polished armor and one creature covered in rough scales. The smooth, reflective lines of the armor tell us it is hard and manufactured (made by people). The jagged, overlapping scales tell us the creature is natural and dangerous. Without any words, texture communicates material, history, and even emotion. Soft textures often feel calm and safe. Rough, spiky textures often feel dangerous or wild. You are giving the viewer information just by choosing your marks carefully.

You can also create texture by combining different techniques in one drawing. This is called mixed texture rendering (REN-der-ing — the process of showing a surface in a drawing). A dragon, for example, might have smooth belly scales drawn with gentle curved lines, rough spine ridges drawn with jagged cross-hatching, and soft wing membranes (the thin skin between wing bones) drawn with very light, fine parallel lines. Each body part gets its own marks, and together they make the whole creature feel believably real — even though dragons do not exist! 🐉

Professional illustrators (artists who make pictures for books, games, and movies) often create a texture library before starting a big project. This is a page or notebook filled with practice swatches — small squares where they test different mark combinations for wood, fur, stone, cloth, water, and more. When they need to draw a texture in a real piece of art, they look back at their library instead of guessing.
