Verbs: Action and Being

Every sentence needs an engine — something that makes it go. That engine is called a verb. A verb is a word that shows an action, a state, or that something exists. Without a verb, a group of words is just a fragment (an incomplete piece), not a real sentence. Think of the sentence 'The dog barks.' The word 'barks' is the verb. It tells us what the dog does. Verbs are doing words and being words, and they show up in every single sentence you speak, read, or write. 🐕

Action verbs are the easiest kind to spot. They describe physical or mental actions — things you can do. Words like run, jump, think, laugh, write, and dream are all action verbs. Physical action verbs describe body movements, like kick or swim. Mental action verbs describe what happens in your mind, like imagine, wonder, or decide. When you say 'She kicked the ball' or 'He imagined a dragon,' the underlined words are action verbs telling us exactly what is happening in the sentence. 🏃

Not all verbs show action. Some verbs show a state of being — meaning they describe what something is or how it exists. These are called linking verbs (also known as state-of-being verbs) because they link, or connect, the subject of a sentence to information about it. The most common linking verbs are forms of 'to be': am, is, are, was, were, will be. For example, in the sentence 'The sky is blue,' the word 'is' links 'sky' to 'blue.' It does not show any action at all — it shows a condition or state. ☁️

Verbs also change their form to show tense — tense is a grammar term that means when an action happens. Present tense verbs describe things happening now. Past tense verbs describe things that already happened. Future tense verbs describe things that will happen later. Look at this example: 'She paints a picture' (present), 'She painted a picture' (past), 'She will paint a picture' (future). Notice how the verb 'paint' changes its form or adds helper words to show time. 🎨

Helper verbs (also called auxiliary verbs) are small verbs that team up with a main verb to build more detailed meanings. Words like will, can, should, must, have, and did are helper verbs. In the sentence 'You should study tonight,' the word 'should' is the helper verb and 'study' is the main verb. Together they form a verb phrase. Helper verbs let us express ideas like possibility, necessity, and different time frames that a single verb cannot show alone. 📚

Verbs must agree with their subjects in number — this rule is called subject-verb agreement. Singular subjects (one person or thing) need singular verb forms, while plural subjects (more than one) need plural verb forms. For example: 'The bird sings' uses 'sings' because 'bird' is singular. But 'The birds sing' uses 'sing' because 'birds' is plural. Even small agreement errors can make a sentence sound awkward, so good writers always check that their subject and verb are a matched pair. 🐦

They tell us what is happening, when it is happening, and connect ideas together.
