Exploring the Moon Up Close

You can see the Moon in the sky at night. Sometimes you can even spot it in the daytime! But what is the Moon actually like up close? 🌕

The Moon is our nearest neighbour in space. It is much smaller than Earth. If Earth were the size of a basketball, the Moon would be about the size of a tennis ball.

The Moon has no air and no weather. There is no wind or rain there at all. It is completely silent because sound needs air to travel.

Look at the Moon and you can see dark patches and round dips. The round dips are called craters. Craters are made when rocks from space crash into the Moon.

Because the Moon has no air, nothing wears the craters away. Craters that were made billions of years ago are still there today!

The astronauts left footprints on the Moon. Because there is no wind or rain, those footprints are still there today! They will last for millions of years.

Gravity on the Moon is much weaker than on Earth. If you were on the Moon, you could jump six times higher than you can on Earth! 🦘
