Ice Hockey: Speed, Skill, and Frozen Action

Ice hockey is one of the fastest team sports on Earth. Two teams of six players skate across a frozen rink trying to shoot a hard rubber disc called a puck into the opponent's net. Players can reach speeds over 30 kilometers per hour, and pucks can fly at more than 160 km/h! The rink is surrounded by boards (the walls around the ice) and thick glass so fans can watch safely. A standard game has three periods, each 20 minutes long, with breaks in between to resurface the ice using a special machine called a Zamboni.

Skating works because ice is slippery — but why? The blade of a skate is very narrow, so all your body weight presses on a tiny area. This creates pressure that slightly melts the ice just beneath the blade, making a thin film of water that acts like a lubricant (a slippery layer that reduces friction). When you push the blade sideways against the ice, that friction is what actually moves you forward. Hockey skates have a slightly curved blade called a rocker, which helps players turn quickly and change direction in a fraction of a second.

Each player on the ice has a position with a specific job. The three forwards — the center and two wingers — focus on attacking and scoring. The two defensemen protect their own net and try to block opposing players. The goalie (also called the goaltender) guards the net and is the last line of defense. Goalies wear enormous pads on their legs, a large glove called a blocker on one hand, and a catching glove called a trapper on the other. All that gear can weigh over 20 kilograms!

Hockey has some unique rules you need to know. Offsides happens when an attacking player enters the offensive zone (the area in front of the opponent's goal) before the puck crosses the blue line. Icing is called when a player shoots the puck all the way from their own half past the opponent's goal line without anyone touching it — this stops teams from just clearing the puck endlessly to waste time. Both calls stop play and result in a face-off, where a referee drops the puck between two players who battle to win possession.

Shooting the puck is a skill with real physics behind it. A wrist shot uses a snapping motion of the wrists to flick the puck quickly and accurately. A slap shot is the most powerful — the player winds up and slaps the stick on the ice just behind the puck, bending the shaft of the stick slightly. When the stick snaps back to straight, it transfers extra energy (like a spring releasing) into the puck. This flex is why hockey sticks are made from materials like carbon fiber or composite blends rather than plain wood.

When a player breaks a rule aggressively — like tripping, hooking (catching an opponent with the stick), or slashing (hitting someone's body with the stick) — a referee sends them to the penalty box for 2 or 5 minutes. During that time their team plays shorthanded, meaning they have one fewer player on the ice. The other team gets a power play, a huge advantage where they have more players and more room to move the puck and set up goal-scoring chances.

If a game is tied after three periods, teams play overtime — a sudden-death extra period where the first goal wins. In the NHL playoffs, overtime periods are played at full five-on-five until someone scores, no matter how long it takes! The longest playoff game in history lasted into a sixth overtime period in 1936. If overtime ends in a tie during the regular season, a shootout decides the winner: three players from each team take turns skating in one-on-one against the goalie to try to score.
