Rugby: Tackles, Tries, and How the Game Works

Rugby union is a full-contact team sport played between two teams of 15 players on a large grass field. The goal is to score more points than the other team by carrying, passing, or kicking an oval ball over the opponent's try line or through their posts. The oval shape of the ball is not just tradition — it makes the ball easier to tuck under your arm while running and gives it an unpredictable bounce, making the game more exciting and challenging. Rugby is played in over 120 countries and is one of the most popular sports in nations like New Zealand, South Africa, England, and France.

One of rugby's most important rules is that you can only pass the ball sideways or backward — never forward. This sounds strange at first, but it actually creates the whole strategy of the game. Teams must use angles, spacing, and teamwork to advance the ball. If you carry the ball and get tackled, a ruck forms — both teams bind together over the ball on the ground and compete to win possession by driving their legs and pushing the other team backward. The ball must be played out with feet, then a player called the scrum-half picks it up to restart play.

Scoring in rugby has four methods. A try (worth 5 points) is scored when a player grounds the ball over the opponent's try line by pressing it to the ground with downward pressure. After a try, the team gets a conversion kick (worth 2 points) — a place kick between the goal posts. A penalty kick (3 points) is awarded when the other team breaks a rule. A drop goal (3 points) happens when a player drops the ball and kicks it through the posts as it bounces. Understanding these options helps teams decide whether to kick for points or go for a try in tight moments.

Rugby players are split into two main groups: forwards (numbers 1 to 8) and backs (numbers 9 to 15). Forwards are generally bigger and stronger. They do most of the physical work — scrums, line-outs, rucks, and mauls. Backs are usually faster and more agile. They receive the ball from the forwards and create scoring chances by running with speed and making clever passes. The scrum-half (number 9) is the link between the two groups, distributing the ball quickly from rucks and scrums. Think of forwards as the engine and backs as the wheels of the team.

A scrum is a unique way to restart play after a minor rule break. Eight forwards from each team bind tightly together in three rows and interlock with the opposing pack. The two groups push against each other while the scrum-half feeds the ball into the tunnel between them. The hooker (number 2, in the middle of the front row) uses their foot to hook the ball backward through the scrum to their team's number 8. A powerful scrum can drive the opposing pack backward — this is called a dominant scrum and puts the defending team under huge pressure.

A line-out happens when the ball goes out of bounds (called into touch). Both teams line up parallel to each other at the touch line. The team throwing in lifts one of their own players high into the air to catch the ball. Strong players called locks (numbers 4 and 5) are usually lifted because of their height and jumping ability. The lifters support the jumper's thighs and ankles, sending them up to 2 meters above the ground. Both teams compete for the ball, so lifting, timing, and coded calls (secret signals) are essential to winning your own line-out.

Tackling in rugby is where physics really matters. When a defender tackles a ball carrier, both players experience a sudden change in momentum — the scientific measure of mass times velocity (how heavy something is times how fast it moves). A smaller, faster player can generate as much momentum as a larger, slower one. Tacklers are taught to hit low, wrap their arms, and drive their legs — this technique transfers maximum force from the ground through their body into the ball carrier. Hitting high is illegal and dangerous, so technique is as important as size.
