  1. Prefixes and Word FamiliesPupils learn how prefixes like un-, dis-, mis-, re- and over- change word meanings, and discover how root words connect families of related words. Through matching, sorting and fill-in-the-blank activities, they practise spotting and using prefixes to read and spell unfamiliar vocabulary.
  2. Into the Story WorldPupils explore how great stories work by reading a short passage, making inferences about characters, predicting what happens next, and then planning their own narrative using paragraphs, conjunctions, adverbs and prepositions.
  3. Speak Up! Discussion and DebatePupils learn how to take part in structured discussions and debates by expressing opinions clearly, listening carefully, and using special 'debate vocabulary' to agree, disagree, and build on what others say.
  4. What Characters Say: Direct SpeechPupils learn to punctuate direct speech using inverted commas, commas, capital letters, and new paragraphs for each new speaker. They practise through matching, sorting, and fill-in-the-blank activities before a final quiz.
  5. Fact Files and Non-Fiction WritingLearn how to read non-fiction fact files to find key information, then write your own fact file using headings, paragraphs and brilliant vocabulary — including the present perfect tense!
  6. Poetry: Patterns and PerformancePupils explore how poets use repetition, rhythm and imagery to create effects, then practise performing and writing their own patterned poem, also applying suffix knowledge to vary their vocabulary.
