Speak Up! Discussion and Debate

Imagine your class is deciding whether school should start one hour later every day. Half the class shouts 'YES!' and the other half shouts 'NO!' at exactly the same time. Nobody can hear anyone! 😅 That is why we have rules for discussion and debate — so every voice gets heard and the best ideas win. Today you will learn how to share your opinions like a true champion debater. 🏆

Before you speak in a discussion, you need a POINT — your opinion or idea. Then you need a REASON — the evidence or explanation that backs it up. Think of it like a sandwich 🥪: your point is the bread on top, your reason is the filling, and you finish with the bread on the bottom by linking back to your point. Without the filling, the sandwich falls apart!

Good debaters also LISTEN carefully. Listening is not just waiting for your turn to speak — it means thinking about what the other person said so you can respond to it. When you build on someone else's idea (add to it or challenge it using what they actually said), your argument becomes much stronger. 💪

Now let us look at TWO SIDES of an argument. In a debate, you might be asked to argue a side you do not personally believe — just like an actor plays a character! This is brilliant practice because it forces you to think deeply about both viewpoints. The topic we will practise with is: 'School uniform should be abolished (got rid of completely).' 👕

When it is your turn to speak to an audience, remember three magic letters: VPE. Voice — speak loudly and clearly so everyone can hear. Pace — do not rush! Speak at a steady speed, like a newsreader on TV. Eye contact — look up from your notes and scan the room. These three things make your argument sound confident even if you feel nervous inside. 😊
