From Caves to Hillforts: Stone Age to Iron Age Britain

Imagine waking up with no house, no shops and no metal tools — just forests, wild animals and stone. That was life for the very first people in Britain! Today we are going to zoom back in time thousands of years to discover how people slowly changed the way they lived, from cave-dwelling hunters to skilled farmers and iron-workers. Get ready for a prehistoric adventure! 🦣

Historians divide prehistoric Britain into three big periods. The Stone Age came first, lasting from around 800,000 BC all the way to 2,500 BC — that is a huge stretch of time! Then came the Bronze Age (2,500 BC to 800 BC), followed by the Iron Age (800 BC to 43 AD). Each period is named after the main material people used to make their tools and weapons.

During the Stone Age, early people were hunter-gatherers — they hunted animals like deer and mammoths and gathered berries, nuts and plants. They moved from place to place following their food. Later in the Stone Age (called the Neolithic, meaning New Stone Age), people made a huge change: they began farming, growing crops and keeping animals. This meant they could settle in one place and build permanent homes. 🌾

Stonehenge in Wiltshire is another amazing piece of evidence. These enormous standing stones were arranged in a circle starting around 3,000 BC. The biggest stones weigh as much as four elephants! Historians think it was used for ceremonies linked to the sun. Moving those stones without wheels or metal tools shows incredible organisation and teamwork — a whole community working together.

In the Bronze Age, people learned to mix copper and tin together to make bronze, a metal much harder than stone. Think of it like upgrading from a plastic spoon to a metal one — far stronger and more useful! Bronze axes, swords and jewellery replaced stone tools. Farmers also began burying their dead in round mounds called barrows, which archaeologists can still find across Britain today.

The Iron Age brought the biggest settlements yet. People built hillforts — large villages on hilltops surrounded by huge banks of earth and timber walls, like a fortress. Iron is stronger than bronze, just as steel is stronger than plastic today. Iron ploughs turned the soil more deeply, growing more food. Tribes had leaders called chieftains, and people were skilled weavers, potters and metal-workers. Life was becoming more complex and organised. 🏰
