Mighty Rome: The Roman Empire and Roman Britain

Imagine an empire so vast it stretched from the sunny deserts of North Africa all the way to the cold, rainy island we call Britain. The Romans built one of the greatest empires the world has ever seen. At its peak, around 117 CE, the Roman Empire ruled over 50 million people! Today we are going to find out how they did it, why they came to Britain, and what they left behind. 🏛️

The Roman Empire was centred on the city of Rome, in what is now Italy. From there, Roman armies marched outwards, conquering new lands. The Empire grew powerful for three big reasons: a brilliant, well-trained army; clever engineering like roads and forts; and a strong system of laws and government. Think of it like a giant spider's web — Rome was the centre, and roads were the threads connecting everything.

Julius Caesar first brought Roman soldiers to Britain in 55 BCE and again in 54 BCE. These were raids — short, sharp attacks to show power — not a full conquest. Caesar, a famous Roman general and politician, wanted to scare the British tribes and stop them helping Rome's enemies in Gaul (modern France). He sailed back to Rome without staying. Britain had to wait nearly 100 years for the real invasion! ⚔️

In 43 CE, Emperor Claudius sent about 40,000 soldiers across the sea to Britain. Claudius wanted glory and riches — Britain had slaves, metals and grain. The Roman army, called legions, was incredibly disciplined. Soldiers trained every day, carried heavy armour, and followed strict orders. They used a famous move called the testudo — meaning tortoise — where soldiers locked shields together like a shell to protect themselves from arrows. 🐢

Once settled in Britain, the Romans transformed the landscape. They built a network of straight roads — over 10,000 kilometres of them! — so soldiers and traders could travel quickly. Roads were built in layers, a bit like a sandwich: big stones at the bottom, smaller stones in the middle, and flat paving on top. Many modern roads in Britain still follow the same routes the Romans laid down 2,000 years ago. 🛣️

Romans also built towns with impressive public buildings. London (Londinium), York (Eboracum) and Bath (Aquae Sulis) all started as Roman settlements. One of their most amazing inventions was the public baths. Romans went to the baths not just to wash, but to meet friends, do business and exercise. The baths had warm rooms, hot rooms and cold plunge pools — like a modern leisure centre! The ruins at Bath still stand today. 🛁

Historians learn about Roman Britain by studying artefacts — objects made or used by people in the past. Coins, pottery, jewellery, writing tablets and mosaic floors have all been dug up by archaeologists (scientists who study the past by excavating sites). A mosaic is a picture or pattern made from tiny coloured tiles. Finding a mosaic tells us a wealthy Roman family lived there, because only rich people could afford them. 🪙
