Wonders of the Ancient World: The Earliest Civilisations

Imagine waking up 5,000 years ago. In one part of the world, people are dragging enormous stones to build a pyramid taller than a 40-storey skyscraper. In another, people are painting pots and herding animals. These two groups are alive at exactly the same time — yet their lives look completely different. Today we explore the world's very first great civilisations and ask: what made them so extraordinary? 🌍

Around 5,000 years ago — roughly 3000 BCE — several civilisations appeared almost at the same time in different parts of the world. Sumer grew up between the Tigris and Euphrates rivers in modern-day Iraq. The Indus Valley civilisation spread across modern Pakistan and India. And in north-east Africa, along the River Nile, Ancient Egypt began to flourish. BCE means Before the Common Era — counting years backwards before the year 0.

Ancient Egypt lasted for an astonishing 3,000 years — longer than the time between the Romans and us today! It was ruled by powerful kings and queens called pharaohs (say: fair-ohs). Egyptians believed pharaohs were gods on Earth. Famous pharaohs include Tutankhamun, who became king aged just nine, and Cleopatra, one of Egypt's last rulers. The pharaoh controlled the army, the law and the land. 👑

Egyptians worshipped hundreds of gods. Each god controlled part of nature or life. Ra was the sun god — Egyptians saw the sun rising each morning as Ra sailing across the sky. Osiris ruled the land of the dead. Anubis, shown with a jackal's head, guided souls to the afterlife. Horus, the falcon-headed god, was linked to the pharaoh. Egyptians built huge temples as homes for their gods, and priests served the gods inside every day. 🦅

Egyptians invented one of the world's earliest writing systems, called hieroglyphics (say: hi-ro-GLIF-iks). Instead of letters like ours, they used small pictures and symbols — over 700 of them! A picture of an owl meant the sound M. A wavy line meant water. Scribes (professional writers) spent years learning hieroglyphics. They wrote on a paper-like material made from the papyrus plant. The Rosetta Stone, discovered in 1799, helped modern historians decode this ancient writing. 📜

While Egyptians were building pyramids, what was happening in Britain? Britain was in the late Stone Age and then the Bronze Age. People lived in small farming villages with no cities or writing. They built impressive stone circles like Stonehenge (started around 3000 BCE) and buried their dead in mounds called barrows. Life was organised and skilled — but there were no pharaohs, no hieroglyphics and no huge stone monuments built by tens of thousands of workers. 🪨

Ancient Egypt is considered significant for many reasons: it lasted 3,000 years, developed writing, built extraordinary monuments, created complex religious ideas and traded across the ancient world. Its achievements influenced later civilisations including the Greeks and Romans. By studying Egypt alongside Sumer, the Indus Valley and prehistoric Britain, we build a picture of how humans across the whole world were developing — each in their own remarkable way — at roughly the same time. 🌟
