Add a Whisper: Parenthesis in Writing

Imagine you are whispering extra information to a friend without stopping your main story. That is exactly what parenthesis does in writing! A parenthesis is a word, phrase or clause inserted into a sentence to add bonus information. The sentence still makes complete sense if you remove the parenthesis. Writers use it to add facts, feelings, descriptions or asides without breaking the flow. There are three punctuation tools that act like handles, holding the extra information safely inside the sentence: brackets ( ), dashes, and commas. Today you will learn how each one works and when to choose it.

First, let us look at brackets. Brackets ( ) are curved marks that wrap around additional information. They signal to the reader that the information inside is a bit like a side note, less important than the main sentence. Example: The Nile (the longest river in Africa) flows through Egypt. Remove the bracketed part and you still have a complete sentence: The Nile flows through Egypt. Brackets are often used in non-fiction and formal writing when you want the extra detail to feel separate and factual. They give your writing a precise, organised feel, like a textbook or an encyclopedia entry.

Next come dashes. A pair of dashes can do the same job as brackets but they feel more dramatic and energetic. Example: The dragon, her eyes blazing with fury, launched itself into the sky becomes The dragon, her eyes blazing with fury, launched itself into the sky using commas, but with dashes: The dragon, her eyes blazing with fury, launched itself into the sky. Try this instead: The dragon, her wings as wide as a house, launched itself into the sky. Dashes interrupt the sentence with a bit of a jolt, making the reader pause and notice the inserted information. They are perfect for creative writing, speeches and moments where you want to add emphasis or surprise. Think of dashes as the loudspeaker version and brackets as the whisper.

Finally, commas can also mark parenthesis. A pair of commas gently tucks extra information into a sentence without drawing too much attention to it. Example: My teacher, who loves science, gave us an exciting experiment to try. The parenthetical clause who loves science is held between two commas. This feels natural and smooth, almost like the way we actually speak. Commas are the most neutral choice, neither as quiet as brackets nor as bold as dashes. They suit both creative and non-fiction writing and are the most commonly used parenthesis punctuation in Year 5 writing.

Now that you know all three tools, the key skill is choosing the right one for your purpose. Ask yourself: Do I want to sound formal and factual? Use brackets. Do I want drama and energy? Use dashes. Do I want something smooth and unobtrusive? Use commas. Great writers make deliberate choices about punctuation because every mark changes how the reader feels. Parenthesis also varies the structure of your sentences, which is one of the hallmarks of a strong Year 5 writer.
