Word Workshop: Building Verbs from Nouns and Adjectives

Here is a challenge: the word 'sharp' is an adjective — it describes something. But what if you want to say that someone is DOING the sharpening? You need a verb! By adding the right suffix (a group of letters added to the end of a word), you can transform 'sharp' into 'sharpen'. That single change switches the word class from adjective to verb. In this lesson, you will learn three powerful suffixes — '-ise', '-ify', and '-en' — that turn nouns and adjectives into verbs.

Let us meet suffix number one: '-ise'. This suffix usually attaches to nouns or adjectives and creates verbs meaning 'to make something become' or 'to do something with'. For example, 'symbol' (noun) becomes 'symbolise' — to represent something with a symbol. 'Final' (adjective) becomes 'finalise' — to make something final. 'Apology' (noun) becomes 'apologise' — to make an apology. Notice that when '-ise' is added, the spelling of the base word sometimes changes slightly: 'apology' loses the 'y' and gains 'ise'. Always check tricky endings carefully when you build new words.

Suffix number two is '-ify'. This suffix also means 'to make' or 'to cause to become' and it tends to attach to adjectives and some nouns. 'Pure' (adjective) becomes 'purify' — to make something pure. 'Terror' (noun) becomes 'terrify' — to fill with terror. 'Simple' (adjective) becomes 'simplify' — to make simpler. Watch out: when a word ends in 'e', you usually drop the 'e' before adding '-ify'. 'Pure' drops the 'e' to give 'purify', not 'pureify'. The suffix '-ify' gives your writing a formal, precise feel and is common in science and official language.

Suffix number three is '-en'. This one is shorter and often connects to adjectives to mean 'to make more of that quality'. 'Dark' becomes 'darken', 'short' becomes 'shorten', 'bright' becomes 'brighten', 'weak' becomes 'weaken'. The '-en' suffix is very common in everyday English and gives your writing energy and directness. Notice that '-en' words often sit neatly in sentences like: 'The storm will darken the sky.' Using these verbs instead of phrases such as 'make darker' makes your sentences tighter and more powerful.

Now you can use these verb-building skills to improve your own writing. Compare these two sentences: 'The chef made the sauce thicker.' versus 'The chef thickened the sauce.' The second sentence uses a verb built from an adjective and is sharper and more direct. Or try: 'She gave an apology.' versus 'She apologised.' Again, the second version is more fluent and professional. Skilled writers choose precise verbs to avoid clunky phrases. Every time you spot a noun or adjective in your writing, ask yourself: 'Is there a '-ise', '-ify' or '-en' verb I could use instead?'
