Mapping Our World

🗺️ Imagine you are a mountain rescue volunteer. A hiker is lost somewhere in the hills and you have just thirty seconds to pinpoint their exact location before sending a helicopter. You cannot say 'near the big tree' — you need a precise code that works anywhere in the country. That code exists: it is called a grid reference, and it is the same system used by the emergency services, the armed forces and every rambler who ever unfolded an Ordnance Survey (OS) map. By the end of this lesson you will be able to read one of those codes yourself, decode the secret symbols printed on OS maps, navigate using eight compass directions and decide which mapping tool is best for different jobs. 📐 An Ordnance Survey map is covered in a grid — a network of numbered vertical lines (called eastings) and horizontal lines (called northings). To give a four-figure grid reference you read the easting first, then the northing. Geographers remember this with the phrase 'along the corridor, then up the stairs.' So if the easting is 34 and the northing is 72, the four-figure reference is 3472. This pins down a one-kilometre square on the map. That is good, but not good enough for a rescue helicopter — a one-kilometre square is roughly the size of 140 football pitches! We need to zoom in further, which is where six-figure references come in.

🔍 A six-figure grid reference divides each one-kilometre square into a ten-by-ten mini grid, giving one hundred smaller squares — each just 100 metres across. You estimate where your point sits inside the big square and add one extra digit to both the easting and the northing. If your point is seven tenths of the way across the easting column and three tenths up the northing column, the six-figure reference becomes 347723 (easting 347, northing 723). Emergency services can now find someone within a 100-metre square — much more useful! OS maps at 1:25 000 scale (the orange Explorer series) are ideal for this because every detail is large enough to estimate those extra digits accurately.

🔣 OS maps are packed with symbols — tiny drawings and colours that replace long descriptions and keep the map neat. Green areas show woodland, blue lines show rivers and streams, and a cluster of black dots can mean a church, a campsite or a viewpoint depending on the exact shape. The key (sometimes called the legend) printed in the corner of every OS map unlocks these symbols. Learning the most common ones lets you 'read' the landscape before you even visit it — you can spot a cliff, a footpath, a railway line or a place of historic interest just by glancing at the sheet. OS symbols are standardised, which means they look the same on every map across the whole of Great Britain.

🧭 A compass has a magnetised needle that always points towards magnetic north. The eight-point compass divides the full circle into eight equal directions: North (N), North-East (NE), East (E), South-East (SE), South (S), South-West (SW), West (W) and North-West (NW). Each direction is 45 degrees apart. On a map, north is almost always at the top. When you describe a route — for example, 'walk NE for 500 metres, then turn SE' — you are giving a bearing in compass points. This skill helps you describe where features are relative to each other, plan walking routes and follow directions in fieldwork. On OS maps a small arrow shows the difference between grid north and magnetic north, though at this scale the difference is tiny.

💻 Paper OS maps, atlases and digital tools like Google Maps or the OS Maps app each have strengths. A paper OS map never runs out of battery, shows enormous detail and is ideal for hiking or fieldwork. An atlas groups maps of many countries together, shows political boundaries and is brilliant for comparing places around the world. Digital mapping tools let you zoom from street level to global view in seconds, switch between satellite photos and map layers, measure distances automatically and share locations with a link. However, they need a device and signal. A skilled geographer chooses the right tool for the job — a paper Explorer map for a day walk in Snowdonia, an atlas to research a country's neighbours, and Google Maps to plan a bus journey across town.
