Natural Resources, Trade and Economic Activity

🌍 Imagine your breakfast this morning. The cocoa in your hot chocolate probably grew in Ghana or Ivory Coast. The wheat in your toast may have come from Canada or Ukraine. The orange juice? Likely from Brazil. And yet you ate it all sitting at home! This is the magic of trade — the buying and selling of goods and services between countries. But before countries can trade, they need something valuable to offer. That something is often a natural resource: a material found in nature that humans can use. Today we are going to find out what natural resources are, why some countries have more than others, and how trade shapes people's lives every single day.

🪨 A natural resource is anything found in nature that people can use. Resources fall into two groups. Renewable resources can be replaced or regrow — think timber (trees), fish, fresh water and wind energy. Non-renewable resources took millions of years to form and will eventually run out — think oil, coal, natural gas and metal ores like iron and copper. Crucially, natural resources are not spread evenly across the planet. The geology (rock type and structure), climate and landscape of each place decide what resources exist there. Saudi Arabia sits on vast underground oil reserves. The Democratic Republic of Congo holds more than half the world's cobalt. Norway has huge fish stocks and fast rivers perfect for hydroelectric power. This uneven distribution is the main reason why countries need to trade.

💱 So how does trade actually work? Trade happens when one country has a surplus (more than it needs) of something, and another country has a deficit (not enough) of that same thing. Countries export goods they produce and import goods they need from elsewhere. For example, Japan has very little oil underground, so it imports oil from the Middle East. In return, Japan exports cars and electronics that it manufactures. The value of what a country exports compared to what it imports is called its trade balance. If a country exports more than it imports, it has a trade surplus. If it imports more than it exports, it has a trade deficit. Trade does not just involve physical goods — countries also trade services such as banking, tourism and software.

🏭 Geographers organise all the ways people earn money into three economic sectors. Primary sector activities take raw materials directly from the natural world — farming, fishing, mining and forestry all belong here. Secondary sector activities involve making or manufacturing things from those raw materials — a factory turning iron ore into steel, or a mill turning wheat into flour. Tertiary sector activities are services — jobs where you help or advise people rather than make physical things. Teachers, doctors, shop workers, bankers and web designers all work in the tertiary sector. In richer, more developed countries, most workers are in the tertiary sector. In lower-income countries, a larger share of workers may still be in the primary sector, extracting resources to export.

⚖️ Trade can bring great benefits — it creates jobs, raises living standards and allows countries to buy things they could never produce themselves. However, it can also create inequality. Sometimes powerful, wealthy countries set prices for resources that are unfair to the poorer countries producing them. A cocoa farmer in Ghana may earn very little for beans that are then sold as expensive chocolate in Europe. This is why organisations like Fairtrade exist — they set a minimum price for goods so that farmers and workers in producing countries receive a fairer share. As a geographer, it is important to ask not just what is being traded, but who benefits and who does not.
