First stop: countries and nationalities. In French, every noun has a gender — it is either masculine (le) or feminine (la). Country names follow this rule too. For example, la France is feminine, but le Portugal is masculine. Nationalities also change depending on whether you are describing a boy or a girl. A boy says 'je suis anglais' (I am English) and a girl says 'je suis anglaise' — notice the extra e on the end. This pattern of adding an e for feminine forms is very common in French and is a key rule to remember. Let's look at some countries and their nationalities together. 🌐

Now let's talk about transport — les transports. In French, the preposition (joining word) you use before a transport word changes depending on the vehicle. For most enclosed vehicles, you use en: en avion (by plane), en train (by train), en voiture (by car), en bus (by bus), en bateau (by boat/ferry). But for a bike or on foot you use à: à vélo (by bike), à pied (on foot). Why the difference? The idea is that with en you are inside or enclosed by the vehicle, while à suggests a more open or physical connection — you sit on a bike rather than in it. Now for the most exciting part: talking about what you did — le passé (the past)! French has a past tense called the passé composé. It sounds complicated, but you only need two key building blocks. First: a helper verb — either avoir (to have) or être (to be). Second: a past participle, which is a special form of the main verb. For travel recounts, two phrases are super useful. 'Je suis allé(e) à…' means 'I went to…' — this uses être as the helper. 'J'ai vu…' means 'I saw…' — this uses avoir. Notice the (e) in allé(e): girls add an e (allée) and boys do not (allé). Key words: nous avons voyagé (we travelled), elle est magnifique (it is magnificent), nous avons mangé (we ate), j'ai acheté (I bought), ma meilleure amie (my best friend), a duré (lasted).

Use these key sentence frames as your scaffold: 'Je suis allé(e) à…' (I went to…), 'J'ai voyagé en/à…' (I travelled by…), 'J'ai vu…' (I saw…), 'J'ai mangé…' (I ate…), 'C'était…' (It was…) followed by words like magnifique (magnificent), amusant (fun), or incroyable (incredible).
