Big Questions: What Does It Mean to Be Human?

🌍 Imagine you are asked to write a label for the whole human race — just one sentence that captures what humans ARE and why we matter. Tricky, right? Philosophers, religious thinkers, and scientists have wrestled with this question for thousands of years. Today we are going to be detectives of ideas. We will investigate what four different worldviews — Christianity, Islam, Hinduism, and Humanism — teach about the nature and purpose of human beings. By the end, you will have enough evidence to write your OWN answer to one of the biggest questions ever asked. 🔍

✝️ Christianity teaches that every human being is made in the image of God. Theologians use the Latin phrase imago Dei (say it: im-AH-go DAY-ee), which means 'image of God.' This does not mean humans look like God physically. Instead, it means humans share qualities such as creativity, moral awareness, and the ability to form relationships — qualities Christians believe reflect God's character. Because of this, every person has innate dignity (worth that cannot be taken away). Christians also believe humans have a soul — a non-physical part of the person that continues after death and is known personally by God.

☪️ Islam also teaches that humans are specially created by Allah (the Arabic word for God). The Qur'an describes humans as Allah's khalifah — meaning steward or representative on Earth. Humans are given the responsibility to care for creation and to live justly. Like Christianity, Islam teaches that humans have a soul (called the ruh in Arabic), breathed into them by Allah at creation. This soul is a trust from God. Islam emphasises that every human life is sacred: the Qur'an states that saving one life is like saving all of humanity. This gives human beings enormous moral worth.

🕉️ Hinduism offers a different but equally profound idea. It teaches that inside every living being there is an atman (say it: AT-man) — the true self or inner soul. The atman is not the body, not the mind, and not even the personality. It is the eternal, unchanging spark of pure consciousness within us. Crucially, Hinduism teaches that the atman is connected to Brahman — the ultimate reality or universal spirit that underlies everything that exists. So at the deepest level, the real 'you' is part of something infinite and eternal. The purpose of human life, in many Hindu traditions, is to realise this truth — a journey called moksha (spiritual liberation).

🧠 Humanism is a non-religious worldview, so it does not believe in a God, a soul, or an afterlife. Instead, Humanists place human beings at the centre of their thinking in a different way. They believe humans are remarkable because of our capacity for reason (logical thinking), empathy (understanding others' feelings), and conscience (our moral sense of right and wrong). These abilities evolved naturally over millions of years. Because there is no God to give life a ready-made purpose, Humanists believe each person has the freedom — and the responsibility — to create their own meaning and to live ethically, contributing to the wellbeing of humanity. Human dignity, for Humanists, comes from what we can think, feel, and do.

🤔 Now it is your turn to think. Each worldview we have studied gives a different answer to 'what makes humans valuable?' — yet there are striking overlaps too. All four agree that humans have a special kind of worth, that how we treat other people matters enormously, and that being human carries responsibilities, not just rights. Whether that worth comes from God, from an eternal inner self, or from our evolved minds, the practical result is similar: every person deserves respect and dignity. Reflecting on evidence from different traditions is itself a very human thing to do!
