Sacred Texts: Words That Guide a Life

📖 Imagine you have a book so important to your family that you treat it like a treasured guest — you wrap it carefully, never place anything on top of it, and read from it every single day. For billions of people around the world, their sacred text is exactly that: not just a book to read once and shelve, but a living guide that shapes how they speak, eat, pray, and treat others. Today we are going to explore four sacred texts — the Qur'an, the Guru Granth Sahib, the Torah, and the Bible — and discover why believers describe them as far more than words on a page.

Let us meet our four texts. The Torah 📜 is the central sacred text of Judaism, containing the first five books of the Hebrew Bible and the laws God gave to Moses. The Bible 📗 is the sacred text of Christianity, split into the Old Testament and New Testament; it includes history, poetry, prophecy, and the life of Jesus. The Qur'an 📕 is the sacred text of Islam, believed by Muslims to be the direct word of God (Allah) revealed to the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ in Arabic. The Guru Granth Sahib 📘 is the sacred text of Sikhism, containing the teachings and hymns of the Sikh Gurus as well as other holy figures.

🕌 For Muslims, the Qur'an is not simply a history book — it is believed to be the exact, unchanged word of Allah. Because of this, many Muslims memorise it completely; a person who achieves this is called a Hafiz (male) or Hafiza (female). Before touching the Qur'an, many Muslims perform wudu (ritual washing) to show respect. Its teachings guide daily prayer five times a day, honest business dealings, care for the poor (zakat means giving a portion of wealth to those in need), and how to treat family and neighbours. The Qur'an is often kept on a stand called a rehal so it never touches the floor.

🪯 In Sikhism, the Guru Granth Sahib holds an extraordinary position: it is treated as a living Guru — a spiritual teacher — not just a book. In every Gurdwara (Sikh place of worship), the Guru Granth Sahib is given its own room to 'sleep' at night and is carried on a special cushion called a manji sahib. Worshippers bow before it when they enter. Its hymns, called shabads, are sung or chanted and teach values like seva (selfless service), equality of all people, and the importance of honest work (kirat karna). These teachings directly shape Sikhs' choices about how to treat every person with equal dignity.

✡️ The Torah is the foundation of Jewish life and law. It contains 613 commandments (mitzvot) covering everything from worship to how food should be prepared. The rules about food are called kashrut — keeping kosher — and they guide what Jewish families buy, cook, and eat every day. The Torah is handwritten on a scroll by a specially trained scribe (sofer); if even one letter is wrong, that scroll cannot be used. In synagogue, the Torah scroll is dressed in a velvet cover and carried in a procession so the community can show their love for it. On Shabbat (the Jewish day of rest each week), Torah study is considered one of the most important activities a person can do.

The New Testament contains four Gospels — accounts of Jesus's life and teachings. Many Christians use the Bible to help them decide how to respond to difficult situations — whether to forgive someone, how to treat people who are struggling, or how to use money and power responsibly. Different Christian denominations (groups) may interpret some passages differently, but all share the Bible as their core authority.

All four traditions treat their texts with deep reverence (deep respect and awe), but they express this differently. Muslims and Sikhs place huge importance on the physical care of the text. Jews have strict rules about who may write the text and how. Christians often focus on reading and interpreting the text in community and private life.
