Earth, Space and the Solar System

🌍 Imagine standing on Earth at midnight, staring up at a sky full of stars. The Sun has "disappeared" — but has it really? No! The Sun is still shining just as brightly as ever. You simply can't see it because Earth has turned you away from it. Everything you see in the sky — the Sun rising and setting, the Moon slowly changing shape, even the seasons — happens because of one enormous, beautiful system: our Solar System. In this lesson you'll discover the eight planets orbiting the Sun, why Earth's spin gives us day and night, and how the orbits of Earth and the Moon create our calendar.

☀️ Our Solar System is everything held together by the gravity of one star: the Sun. The Sun is roughly 109 times wider than Earth and contains about 99.8% of all the mass in the Solar System. Orbiting the Sun are eight planets, dozens of dwarf planets (like Pluto), hundreds of moons, asteroids and comets. Gravity — the invisible pulling force between objects with mass — keeps every planet travelling in a curved path, called an orbit, around the Sun rather than flying off into space. The closer a planet is to the Sun, the stronger gravity pulls it and the faster it must travel to stay in orbit.

🌅 Now let's tackle the big question: why do we have day and night? Earth is constantly spinning on its axis — an imaginary line running from the North Pole to the South Pole. This spinning is called rotation. Earth completes one full rotation every 24 hours, which is why a day lasts 24 hours. The side of Earth facing the Sun experiences daytime because sunlight reaches it. The side facing away is in shadow, so it experiences night-time. As Earth rotates from west to east, the Sun appears to rise in the east and set in the west — but really it is Earth doing the moving, not the Sun.

📅 While Earth rotates (spins) once every 24 hours, it is also orbiting (travelling around) the Sun. Earth's orbit is roughly circular — actually a slightly squashed circle called an ellipse. One complete orbit takes approximately 365.25 days, which is why a year lasts 365 days and we add a leap day every four years to use up those extra quarter-days. Earth's axis is tilted at about 23.5° compared to its orbit. This tilt is what causes the seasons: when the Northern Hemisphere leans toward the Sun it receives more direct sunlight and warmth (summer), while the Southern Hemisphere leans away (winter), and six months later the situation reverses.

🌕 As well as orbiting the Sun, Earth has its own natural satellite — the Moon. A satellite is any object that orbits a planet. The Moon orbits Earth roughly once every 27 to 29 days (about one month). As the Moon travels around Earth, sunlight lights up different portions of its surface from our point of view on Earth. These changing shapes — crescent, half, gibbous, full — are called the phases of the Moon. The Moon does not produce its own light; it reflects sunlight, just like a mirror. The Moon's gravity also pulls on Earth's oceans, causing the tides — the regular rise and fall of sea levels each day.

🔭 Let's bring it all together. The Solar System is a beautifully organised set of moving parts. Earth orbits the Sun once a year, spinning as it goes so that every part of its surface gets daylight and darkness in turn. The Moon orbits Earth roughly once a month, giving us lunar phases and tides. The other seven planets each follow their own paths around the Sun — the inner rocky planets close in, the giant planets much further out. Gravity is the invisible force connecting everything. Scientists called astronomers use powerful telescopes and space probes to keep discovering new details about this vast system we call home. 🌌
