Design & Technology

Designing, making, and evaluating real, useful products.

0 of 4 lessons done

  1. Design Like a Pro: Research and InnovateChildren explore how professional designers research existing products and users before generating ideas. They learn how to write design criteria, produce annotated sketches and cross-sectional diagrams, and discover the work of a key designer — all skills they will use when designing their own innovative, functional product.
  2. Switched On: Computing and Electrical ControlChildren learn how series circuits work, how computing adds programmable control to electrical systems, and how to evaluate a finished product against design criteria. The lesson moves from circuit basics to coding concepts to critical evaluation, using real D&T vocabulary throughout.
  3. Engineer It: Mechanical and Structural ChallengesChildren explore how mechanical systems — gears, pulleys, cams, levers and linkages — create and control movement in real products. They learn to select the right mechanism for a design problem, build a working prototype safely and accurately, then evaluate it against their original design criteria.
  4. Celebrate the Season: Cooking Savoury DishesChildren explore food seasonality and supply chains, then plan a balanced savoury dish using seasonal ingredients and safe cooking techniques, before evaluating their creation against taste, nutrition, appearance and user needs.
