Different Worldviews: Religions and Non-Religious Ways of Seeing the World

🌍 Imagine you are looking at the same landscape through six different coloured windows. Each window lets in real light, but the colour tints everything you see. A worldview works like that. It is the set of beliefs and values a person uses to understand the world — who made it, why we are here, how we should live, and what happens when we die. Every person has a worldview, whether they are religious or not. Today we will explore how some of the world's major religions and a non-religious philosophy called Humanism answer life's biggest questions, and we will look for both differences AND surprising similarities.

Let us start with the question of God. Christianity, Islam, Judaism, and Sikhism are monotheistic — they believe in one God who is personal, all-powerful, and the creator of everything. Christians believe God is known through Jesus Christ, his son, who is also God in human form (the Trinity). Muslims believe Allah is one, utterly unique, and has no partners or children. Jews believe in one God who made a covenant (special agreement) with the Jewish people. Sikhs believe in one God called Waheguru, present everywhere and accessible to all. Each tradition uses scripture — the Bible, the Quran, the Torah, the Guru Granth Sahib — as a key source of guidance about God's nature.

Hinduism and Buddhism take different approaches. Hinduism is diverse: many Hindus are theistic and worship personal deities such as Vishnu, Shiva, or Devi, yet most also believe these are expressions of one ultimate reality called Brahman. Buddhism does not centre on a creator God. The Buddha (Siddhartha Gautama) taught that suffering arises from craving and ignorance, and that following the Eightfold Path leads to Nirvana — a state of liberation from suffering. The focus is on understanding the nature of reality rather than worshipping a creator. This makes Buddhism non-theistic, though not atheistic — Buddhists do not necessarily deny the existence of gods, but gods are not the path to liberation.

Humanists take a secular, non-religious worldview. They do not believe in God or the supernatural. Instead, Humanists believe that human beings developed through natural evolution and that our universe came into being without a divine creator. This does not mean life is meaningless to Humanists — quite the opposite! They believe humans can find real meaning through relationships, creativity, learning, and working to make the world a better place. Humanists rely on science and reason as the best tools for understanding the world, and they base their ethics (ideas about right and wrong) on human wellbeing and empathy rather than on religious scripture or divine commands. 🤝

Now here is something fascinating: when you look closely, worldviews that seem very different often share important values. Almost every worldview we have studied teaches some version of the Golden Rule — treat others as you would like to be treated. Christianity says love your neighbour as yourself. Islam has a Hadith (saying of the Prophet) teaching you should wish for your brother what you wish for yourself. Judaism has Rabbi Hillel's famous saying: do not do to others what is hateful to you. Sikhism teaches seva (selfless service). Buddhism promotes compassion (karuna) for all beings. Humanists ground their ethics in empathy and human wellbeing. Different reasons, different frameworks — but a striking shared conclusion. 💡

A worldview does not just answer abstract questions — it shapes everyday life in concrete ways. A Muslim's worldview means they pray five times a day facing Mecca, fast during Ramadan, and avoid certain foods (halal rules). A Hindu's dharma might shape their career choices and family obligations. A Buddhist might practise daily meditation to train the mind. A Sikh wears the Five Ks — including the kara (steel bracelet) and kesh (uncut hair) — as physical signs of their commitment to God. A Humanist might volunteer for a charity or sign up to donate organs after death because they believe this life is the one chance to make a positive difference. Worldview is not just what you think — it is how you live.
