Sacred Figures, Prophets, and Teachers

🌟 Imagine someone whose words, spoken or written thousands of years ago, still guide millions of people every single day. Across the world, believers wake up, pray, eat, work, and make moral choices shaped by the teachings of extraordinary figures from the past. Some are called prophets — people believed to carry a message from God. Others are teachers, enlightened sages, or liberators. In this lesson, we will meet six of the most influential figures in human history, explore what made them significant to their followers, and ask a big question: what qualities make someone spiritually important?

Let us meet our six figures. Moses (Judaism) is believed to have led the Israelites out of slavery in Egypt and received the Torah — the sacred law — from God on Mount Sinai. Jesus (Christianity) is believed by Christians to be the Son of God; his teachings on love, forgiveness, and salvation are recorded in the Gospels. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ (Islam) is believed by Muslims to be the final prophet, who received the words of Allah through the angel Jibril — these revelations became the Qur'an. The Buddha (Buddhism) was Siddhartha Gautama, a prince who gave up wealth to seek the truth about suffering and reached enlightenment — deep spiritual understanding. Guru Nanak (Sikhism) was the first of ten Gurus who taught equality, service, and devotion to one God. Krishna (Hinduism) is a divine figure whose teachings to the warrior Arjuna are recorded in the Bhagavad Gita.

How are these teachings kept alive? Sacred texts play a huge role. A sacred text is a written collection of teachings, laws, stories, or revelations considered holy by believers. But texts are not just read silently — they are memorised, chanted, sung, and discussed. Muslims learn the entire Qur'an by heart; those who do are called Hafiz. Sikhs listen to the Guru Granth Sahib being read continuously in a ceremony called Akhand Path. Jews read the Torah aloud in synagogue on a yearly cycle. Christians read Gospel passages at every church service. This constant repetition keeps the figure's teachings at the centre of daily life.

These figures are not only remembered — they are actively followed. Muslims pray five times a day (Salah) in the pattern taught by the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. Buddhists meditate using techniques the Buddha described. Sikhs serve free food to anyone at the Langar (community kitchen) because Guru Nanak taught that all people are equal before God. Christians follow Jesus's command to love your neighbour. Jewish families light Shabbat candles, following Mosaic law. Hindus may perform puja (worship) at a home shrine to Krishna. In each case, the figure's teachings have become habits, rituals, and values woven into everyday life across generations.

What do all these figures have in common? Reflecting across traditions, scholars and believers notice shared qualities: courage (Moses defied a Pharaoh; the Buddha left his palace despite great privilege), compassion (Jesus healed the sick; the Buddha taught that suffering can be overcome for everyone), humility (Muhammad ﷺ described himself as only a messenger; Guru Nanak rejected caste privilege), and wisdom (all six offered answers to deep questions: Why do we suffer? How should we treat others? What happens after death?). Followers look to these figures because they modelled the values they taught — they did not just speak about compassion, they lived it.

🌍 Today, the teachings of these six figures continue to inspire not only religious practices but also art, music, architecture, and ethical movements worldwide. The civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr. drew on Jesus's teachings; Gandhi was influenced by the Bhagavad Gita. Sacred sites connected to these figures — Jerusalem, Makkah, Bodh Gaya, Amritsar — attract millions of pilgrims every year. The lives of these figures remind us that ideas about justice, compassion, and purpose have always been at the heart of what it means to be human — across cultures, centuries, and continents.
