Electricity: Voltage, Components and Circuits

Every circuit needs an energy source. A single cell — often called a battery — has a voltage. Voltage (measured in volts, V) is the 'push' that drives electric current around a circuit. Think of voltage like water pressure in a pipe: higher pressure pushes more water through. Current is the flow of tiny charged particles called electrons. When you add a second cell in series (end-to-end), the voltages add together, giving electrons a bigger push — so more current flows. More current through a bulb means it shines more brightly; more current through a motor makes it spin faster.

Circuits are built from components — the individual parts that each have a job to do. A cell or battery provides energy. A bulb converts electrical energy into light and heat. Each symbol is simple and precise. The cell symbol is a long thin line (positive) next to a shorter thick line (negative). A battery of two or more cells shows several of these pairs. A bulb is a circle with an X inside. A switch is a gap in a line with a small tilted line that can 'close' the gap. A motor is a circle with an M inside. Always draw wires as straight lines with right-angle corners — never wobbly curves!

Now let us think about fair testing. A fair test changes only ONE variable at a time — called the independent variable — while keeping everything else the same (controlled variables). Suppose you want to investigate: 'How does the number of cells affect the brightness of a bulb?' Your independent variable is the number of cells. Your dependent variable — what you measure — is the brightness of the bulb (you could use a light sensor or simply observe and rate it). Controlled variables include the type of bulb, the length of wire, and whether the circuit is series or parallel. Changing two things at once means you cannot trust your results.

Look at the bar chart above. Each cell adds exactly 1.5 V, so the relationship is directly proportional — double the cells, double the voltage. Scientists call this a linear relationship. When you record results in an investigation like this, you should look for patterns and try to explain them using scientific knowledge.
