Adjectives: Describing Words

Imagine telling a friend about a dog. You could say I saw a dog. But that is not very exciting! Now try this: I saw a huge, fluffy, brown dog. Much better! The words huge, fluffy, and brown are called adjectives. Adjectives are describing words. They tell us more about a noun. They make our sentences interesting and fun to read! 🐕

Adjectives can describe lots of things about a noun. They can tell us the SIZE of something: tiny ant, giant whale. They can tell us the COLOR: red apple, silver star. They can tell us how something FEELS: soft pillow, rough rock. They can even tell us how something TASTES or SMELLS: sweet candy, stinky cheese! 🧀

Where do adjectives live in a sentence? Most of the time, an adjective comes right before the noun it describes. In the fluffy cat, fluffy is the adjective and it comes right before cat. Sometimes the adjective comes after the noun: The cat is fluffy. Both ways are correct! The adjective is always the describing word. 🐱

You can use more than one adjective to describe a noun! The old, tired dog slept all day. Here old and tired are both adjectives describing dog. When you use two or more adjectives together, you usually put a comma between them. More adjectives means more detail for your reader to picture in their mind! 🌈

Adjectives can also compare two things! If one pizza is big and another pizza is even bigger, we added er to make the comparing form. If something is the biggest of all, we add est. Small, smaller, smallest. Funny, funnier, funniest. This special trick helps us say which thing has MORE or MOST of a quality. 🍕

Now you know that adjectives are describing words that tell us more about nouns. They can describe size, color, shape, sound, taste, feel, and more. They usually come right before the noun. They can compare things using er and est. Adjectives are like the paint that adds color to your sentences! 🎨
