Hot Planets and Cold Planets

The planets in our solar system are very different from each other. Some are boiling hot. Some are freezing cold. Why is that? Let's find out!

The Sun gives off heat and light. Planets closer to the Sun get more heat. Planets far away from the Sun get much less heat and stay cold.

Mercury is the closest planet to the Sun. Its sunny side gets scorching hot, up to 430 degrees Celsius. That is way hotter than an oven! 🌡️

Earth is just the right distance from the Sun. It is not too hot and not too cold. This helps water stay as liquid, and helps living things survive. 💧

Mars is farther from the Sun than Earth. It is a cold, dusty planet. Temperatures on Mars can drop to minus 80 degrees Celsius at night. Brrr! 🥶

Neptune is the farthest planet from the Sun. It is incredibly cold there, about minus 200 degrees Celsius. That is one of the coldest places in our solar system!
